I hear that virtually all traditional merry go round coal hoppers have been retired from service by DB. Will we see any of these hoppers enter preservation. Surely these hoppers deserve a place in railway preservation and would look great will a class 56/58s.

    The first two are preserved.
    350000 - NRM Locomotion
    350001 - Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway
350002 - Not technically preserved but is on static display on a section of track at Knottingly depot.
351500 - was at Barry Island Railway but I don't know if this is preserved or dumped there, or still on site.
Bombardier Transportation, Derby use 354036, 355286 & 356341 as Brake Force Wagons
CF Booth Ltd use 350733 & 355719 as, I think, for weighing scrap as does 351207 at Long Marston.

Also notably missing from preservation are the HDA's 368xxx series, most being converted to MHA. And also the domestic coal hoppers in the 360xxx 361xxx series. Very few of these left around.

As you say with several 56's and likely more 58's to be preserved a small rake of these would be very appropiate.

Not inappropriate stock for steam haulage either; I am sure I have seen photos of a J27 hauling them and various industrial locos would have worked with them too.

I thought the class 58 loco group had an MGR fund?

Don't forget that steam carried on at certain pits until at least the mid 80s. I know all the locos at a pit near me had a sign in the cab that stated the max load of each type full and empty. I have no idea if they kept the boards in preservation.

Just for reference the MHAs maintained the tradition of ballast wagons being named after fish.
    COALFISH
However the similar conversion of tank wagons was stretching it a bit.
