First Class 58 saved for preservation :).

It's a shame 58002 wasn't saved. I remember seeing her at Birmingham new street when just built. Happy days

 

Oh yeah, thats right. Of course they just got the name Duffs by chance, nothing to do with them been so unreliable that they had to derate the engines or anthing like that

 

58016 seen on a low loader heading south on the A500 past Stoke -On-Trent this afternoon at approx. 17.00, where's she off to?

 

A post further back in this thread suggests she was already at Barrow Hill some while ago and had been joined by 58045 (for source of parts, I have read elsewhere this unit maywell have already departed BH for the melting pot). If 58016 were on the way to BH going south on A500 SoT would be a curious route, but road access to a rail drop-off point may be difficult (bridges etc.), don't know.

The Class 58 Locomotive Group's 58016 is being prepared for its move from DB Schenker's Crewe Electric Depot to its new restoration base at Barrow Hill Roundhouse. The move is planned to take place on Thursday 5th August 2010, an ironic date for the engine, as it shall be 8 years to the day since it was withdrawn from EWS active service. Once at the Derbyshire Railway Centre work can begin on overhauling the locomotive and returning it to operation; with one of the first tasks being to swap the power unit with the better conditioned one recovered from classmate 58045

 

58016 NOW SAFELY ENSCONCED IN THE YARD AT BARROW HILL.

 

So 58045 has yielded a better PU for 58016. There was also an image on wnxx of 58045 on the jacks at BH minus bogies, so maybe the 58016 lads have secured a spare/replacement set of bogies/wheelsets as well?

Given that they have the finance, it is eminently sensible to lay in the spares you need for long-term preservation of your chosen machine. I guess it is also reasonable to assume '45 has yielded lots of smaller spares as well.

 

58045 ARRIVED AT BH ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO. SHE IS TO BE USED AS A SOURCE OF SPARES AND HAS BEEN PROGRESSIVELY STRIPPED BOTH BY VOLUNTEERS AND CONTRACTORS. SHE HAS A GOOD POWER UNIT AND GENERATOR WHEREAS 58016'S IS NONE TO GOOD. 58016 ARRIVED AT BARROW HILL BY ROAD AT AROUND 20.00 ON THURSDAY 5 AUGUST FROM CREWE. WHICH ROUTE IT CAME BY I KNOW NOT . (I KNOW I WAS THERE WORKING) SHE WAS UNLOADED ON FRIDAY 6TH AND IS NOW IN THE YARD.

as far as i know 58045 has not been lifted but that doesnt mean it hasnt. i cant see why it would have been when the the loco the spares are destined for didnt arrive for another 2/3 weeks. (what would they have swapped the bogies with) as far as i can see from looking at 58016/45 each loco has one bogie with good tyres and one bogie with bad tyres but i'm no expert on these things. dont know what spares are being kept. i would imagine as much as possible. and just a bare shell will be scrapped. at least one cab was completely stripped by volunteers/contractors indicating they want as many spares as possible. good luck to the 58 group they have my full support will be good to have one running at Barrow Hill.

 

yec2521: Have a look at the "latest news" section of wnxx, scroll down the page to 24th July, and there is a photo of 58045 on the jacks at BH with both bogies out.
That was why I asked about swapping wheelsets/bogies. The only reason I can think of for lifting '45 off its bogies otherwise would be to get at traction motors if they were wanted as spares.

Edit: Looking at the c58lg website, 58045 was indeed lifted to recover the traction motors.

 

wasnt 58016 rebogied in France shortly before she fired her main altenator? there are pics on the web of a joint EWS/SNCF/ALLELYS team doing it in what looks to be a large yard with very little facilities. This being the case shouldnt 58016 have fairly good bogies, as she hasnt been lifted to my knowledge since returning from the continent.???

 

like i said i'm no expert but both bogies appear to have one good and one thin tyred bogie each. i've seen some pictures of a lift using hydraulic lifting beams not sure if ths is 58016 though.

 

One of the wheels is cracked on one of the 58's , not just the tyre but right through to the core.
I guess this might have a bearing on a bogie swap.

remember its only 1 wheel with this problem. they could still have the bogies off and just discard that 1 axle!

 

but i do not know what palns the class 58 group have for the bogies/wheelsets.
