You are the only one who seems to have a major problem with the use of the Paxman Pannier tank, so you are the only loser...

Fair enough, it's a free Country. I just hope that you don't run into the SVR Saturday diesel diagram (Class 50 last weekend, up to 2 Class 20's in use due to shortage of steamable locos on occasion this year), that the FR aren't using Castells Conwy or Criccieth, the W&L doing a spot of shunting with Chattenden or the TR similar with Merseysider during visits. Presumably sighting such tools of Satan in use will see you shower the volunteers operating them with similar insults to those with which you used in this thread.

I am unfortunate in seemingly having things in common with yourself as I am a member of the SVR and love narrow gauge steam. Please keep us posted of your future visits to these Railways, it will ensure I can avoid them if you are there.

Right, now that someone has decided they won't be attending, can we Railway Enthusiasts get back on track and run this gala without interuptions?!!!

Sounds like thats one individuals custom that you can do without.

Well done with vision to dare to mix the traction types up. Sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Best of both worlds. shame I cant be there.

    Here here!

Despite being a proselytising diesel zealot (and I might as well cleanse all the demons and add in Mk 1 TSO to said zealotry), I am realistic enough to see that it won't be possible to please all the people all the time. I also conclude that some are incapable of seeing reason and will look for the slightest opportunity to complain and criticise; no matter what folk say or do.

Having been part of the team that organised and ran the 1960's event at the Railway earlier this month, I can say with confidence (but no impartiality!) that a Gala at Llangollen is well worth the visit, whatever is working the trains. The atmosphere at Llan station is very special on a busy timetable and the ability to enjoy a fine pint of Welsh ale from the footbridge, taking in the wonderful vista of the river and town whilst steam locos come and go beneath you is hard to beat.

I've been reading this thread with a mixture of hilarity and disbelief. Liberal minded? The people behind this gala -- and the successful 60s weekend -- are liberal minded. It's you who isn't, and who needs to grow up. Take a look at this photo of 80072: http://railphotos.demeseo.com/p66276823.html

OK, the photo's a bit duff, but isn't it a magnificent pairing? I don't know if it's scheduled to happen (haven't looked at the timetable yet), but it would be wonderful it the Class 14 was double-heading with a Pannier or a Prairie, or anything else steam-driven come to that. At least those of us planning on attending will be able to enjoy the weekend and the atmosphere (steam AND diesel) without your whining spoiling it for us all.

Now we are back to the real discussion, lets look forward to a gala with three visiting locos and what promises to be another great weekend amid the Berwyn mountains!

Woody Bay will never be the same! Sorry to go off topic but Matt K, what can you tell us about your 37 fixer-upper project. I understand you may need somewhere to give it a leg stretch??

Dont know how much we know to be honest

As i understand it, 37683 has been loaned by DRS to LNWR heritage to train their apprentices on diesel traction. It has nothing to do with the Heritage Centre.

DRS still have full ownership of the locomotive and I doubt there will be any change in that.

Having said that I havent been on site in a couple of months (I live in Sheffield now and have little oportunity to get back)

However when I do manage to get back I shall enquire futher and PM you off topic Tez. Another line of enquiry might be to drop D1963 a pm hes there alot more than I.

As to the material condition of it erm............... Bogies are suspect and power unit has bits missing. Makes you wonder what happened to this machine once Harry had fully overhauled it? it never left barrow hill and then came to us???

However all the above could be wrong. (thats as ive had it explained to me)

Besides weve got our hands full assessing just how were going to repair D1842 limited numbers of us, limited funds etc etc etc

Oh no he hasn't! What I'm finding strange about the assertions of the Llangollen Diesel Group - who have a number of beautifully restored diesels to their name, by the way - concerning the introduction of the D95XX machine into the Autumn Steam Gala is that the splendidly sophisticated PDF file on the railway's ASG webpage makes no mention of a diesel at all. I look forward to seeing the timetable for the Friday.

    All the best :fencing:

For my part, D9521 working is an added attraction that has clinched it for me; and I live in Cornwall! After all, the D95xx have coupling rods so can be honorary steam engines! I shall talk nicely to the boss and see if I can get Friday off as well.

Coupled with Chasewater industrial (diesel as well as steam!) gala that weekend, the journey is worthwhile.

D9521 IS working on the Friday and sunday, despite what the website says. That pdf just hasn't been updated.

In other news, the 6880 Society are to hold one of their beer festivals during the entire event. Though it wont be on the scale of SSS events, we still hope it will be as successful as our previous efforts. Hopefully we might see some of you there.

The PDF doesn't say the D95XX will be working and the events web page http://www.llangollen-railway.co.uk/page94.html is still under construction with less than four weeks to go. All rather odd.

I've decided not to go, I cancelled the B&B this morning much to my regret. It's a long way to go from Harrow to Llangollen for what has turned into a one day steam gala. The Bluebell's more local as is the Swanage and the MHR. Unfortunately both the Swanage and MHR have their galas on the same weekend as the SVR which is some incentive to visit, particularly the Swanage which is one of my favourite railways, but I imagine the Bluebell will be the target, it usually is.

    Enjoy your weekend

Did you lose interest in main line steam when the first diesels were introduced?
