Well we had one for many years at Foxfield on just about the steepest part of Foxfield bank, 1 in 19. The remains of it have only very recently been removed as part of the on-going works around the colliery prior to re-opening next year.

From my initial research I have always worked on sections through stations ,that is the part where the train will be stood and need to get away from standstill on, to be shallower than 1:300.

I accept there will be locations where this gradient would be impossible to acheive, although , on new or reconstruction its more about getting your civils set out properly on the adjoining sections, more often than not.I have seen some very steep station areas but they are not impresssive from a design point of view.

Whilst trains can stop and get away again the steeper you get, only creates more slip in the wet and rail ware opportunity, as well as safety issues.

    Best Regards The Engineer

Spam? That post makes more sense than some others on here.

"... impossible to shake the foundations of the King... ". Obviously knows something about GWR firebox construction.
