    Hi all,

I had a working day at Ropley today and managed to photograph 12049 which has now been pulled out of the C&W workshop.

It looks dreadful, but surely it's restorable?

I thought it would look worse than that but must assume the fire damage to the mechanicals and all the electrics make it uneconomical to repair.

Bottom half of the shunter doesn't look like it has been touched by the fire - But omg there must be some serious damage done to the engine and top half? New replacement sheets needed surely? As I would imagine some of the metal would have bowed under the heat?

Not so sure that anything is uneconomical to repair in the heritage universe. It's just that some jobs take longer than others. I'm sure the MHR will one day get around to sorting this problem out.

Not just the wiring - it's the heat that does unseen damage. I remember we had a case of arson on a Class 465 EMU back in 2005 where the heat had annealed the aluminium extrusions that made up the bodyshell, requiring new sectiosn to be made up and welded in. The heat will damage the metal at the microstructure level as well as physically warping the thinner sections.

    Regards,

    Dan

On TTI duty today behind Tornado - very busy with customers enjoying the day and the star at-traction. 9F on the other train, and 34007 on Footplate Experience.

Work on dismantling the carriage workshops is well under way. The Class 11 and the Dining Car chassis have been extracted and are in the yard. The Mk1 and tender are still in the carriage shop.

I think the LSWR Dining car is very much repairable, provided the underframe is not warped or buckled from the intense heat.

In some ways a rebuild of the bodywork could now be easier if the drawings are to hand, as everything can be made in part form and assembled like a giant airfix kit.

Frames were warped from what I heard this evening.. The bogeys and what was left of frames were in the yard this evening next to the cutting gear. cut frames, buffer beams etc lying on the ground and plenty of it to be seen in a skip. Looks like it has had it!

Looking at Steam Tubes' photo of the shed interior taken prior to the fire, it shows a spotless tidy area , with the vehicles well separated. It seems amazing that a fire of that intensity could take hold in such a short time period.

I was thinking along the same lines Bob, but I guess we will never know.

Just the opinion of an old fool.

Have the remains of the MK1 TSO, and the U tender been extracted from the damaged shed yet?

The contractors seemed from Tony`s pics taken on Tuesday, to be advancing through the demolition of the burnt building almost as quick as the fire!

So far whats come out has no future re-use, does not bode well for the tender.

tso and tender still there. I didn't wander further up due to tape and what seemed sensible. will have to wait and see but never quite sure what that heat has done. not an expert in metallurgy.
clearance seems to be going well. I only popped in to see 60163.

Most of the LSWR coach is now in the metal skip and the class 11 12049 has been removed from Ropley. The latest info on 12049 is it's been sold for component removal.
