Indeed it was 82029. It can be seen at Levisham on our website http://www.82045.org.uk/82045_history.html
For a comparatively small class, the 82XXX`s had a remarkably wide distribution in England and Wales. Examples were allocated to all four BR regions, and could be found at locations as far apart as Darlington, Pwllheli, Padstow and Waterloo. The hope is that when 82045 is built it will be available to visit (at the Trust`s and SVR`s discretion) other heritage railways.

True, and I'd love to see one there, but I think they'd be a bit small for the NYMR nowadays.

61624: Sorry I've been away for a couple of days. I was certainly not suggesting how people spend their money! If there are people up there in the North East, or anywhere else for that matter who have a viable plan and the money to build a B16, B17, A8, V1, V3, V4, J39, L1** etc or any other favourite LNER extinct loco, then good luck to them.
My comments were based simply on two premises, firstly that batch production of any class of loco is likely to result in each unit being at a lower cost than a one-off, and secondly that the standard classes were our most modern steam engine designs, built for ease of operation by their crews, the shed staff, and presumably the works as well.

** taken from just the first two pages of the NYMR thread.

There were several reasons why the BR Std 3 was selected as a new build. This is detailed quite comprehensively at http://www.82045.org.uk/82045_project-history.html which I invite readers here to study.
Along with many smaller components, quite serendipitously from the SVR's perspective, several of the Std 3's major cast components are useful to other engines here (and elsewhere).

To date I believe the following: -
    Axlebox guides - Identical to those on BR Std Cl 4 4-6-0s (75XXX), 2-6-0s (76XXX) and 2-6-4Ts (80XXX); Completely compatible with Ivatt 4 2-6-0 (43106), possibly others.
    Hornblocks - Identical to those on BR Std Cl 4 2-6-0s (75XXX) and 2-6-4Ts (80XXX); Completely compatible with Ivatt 4 2-6-0 (43106)
    Expansion Link Brackets - Identical to those on BR Std Cl 4 4-6-0s (75XXX) 2-6-0 (76XXX), 2-6-4Ts (80XXX) and Ivatt 4 2-6-0
Cylinders - Identical to those on BR Std Cl 4 2-6-0s and Ivatt 4 2-6-0
Cylinder Covers (Front & Rear) two types - Identical to those on BR Std Cl 4 4-6-0s, 2-6-0s and 2-6-4Ts; compatible with Ivatt 4 2-6-0 (43106).
Of course the Std 3 carries a derivative of the GWR No 2 boiler and hence the firebox flanging blocks will prove useful for many engines of Swindon origin carrying that boiler.

Any opinions expressed here may not be those of any group to which I am affiliated (and may not even by my own!).

Your point is taken, but I hve a feeling that, whatever the merits of batch production may be, the future lies in the manufacture of one-offs for the foreseeable future because enthusiasts (who will be the main contributors, it's hard to see railways funding new builds) are more likely to favour "missing links" than more of the same. Ironically, the standard 3 project, by making available more "standard patterns" will help to keep the locos it is intended to supplant or supplement running

Hornblocks are unique to the 77XXX and 82XXX classes.
    Cylinder covers fit 76XXX, 77XXX, 82XXX and LM4 2-6-0s only.
Expansion Link Brackets are not compatible with the 75XXX class

Thank you for the corrections. Please forgive the errors and incomplete descriptions; (typed after too many vodkatinis).
    1. Whilst the Hornblocks are unique to the 77XXX and 82XXX classes the original pattern for the Ivatt 4 simply had the additional connections points added for grease lubrication for the BR types. The LMS oil lubrication points were not removed. If machined appropriately the hornblock may thus be fitted to an Ivatt 4.
    2. I meant to say I believe the hornblocks are identical to those on BR Std Cl 4 2-6-0 (76XXX). They would also be useful to anyone contemplating a BR Cl3 Mogul.
    3. Thank you for correcting my erroneous statement regarding the Expansion Link Bracket castings. They are, of course identical to those on BR Std Cl 3 2-6-0s (77XXX), Cl4 2-6-0 (76XXX), the Ivatt 4 2-6-0 and possibly other LMS types.

I'm sure other large compatible components will emerge in due course.

Incidentally, is the super-heater header compatible with any other BR types? I'm pretty certain the Cl3 was the only Std with a boiler derived from former GW engines (but I'm open to correction).

Not yet; but they are in my thoughts. At present the 82045 Trust wants to cast from (and then machine) those items remaining uncast; currently stored in the 82045 pattern loft (aka Chris Proudfoot's garage). http://www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-aug10.html and http://www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-sept09.html

I only asked because 76079 needs a new cylinder. Present plans are to fabricate one but the existence of a pattern may have caused a change of direction.

That is similar information to that I've received from other sources.
I'm unsure of your relationship with the Cl 4 but I'd invite any decision maker to contact me for an initial conversation.

Brian, being a complete non-tech in respect of your superb craftsmanship with pattern making, can I ask how many times a pattern can be used for a casting before it needs reworking? Or is that the wrong question altogether, in that it is another part in the process that "wears-out"?

Unfortunately there isn't a simple reply to your question. It depends!

Many factors influence the wear and tear a pattern suffers at the foundry, for which the moulders are not always to blame. Sand itself is quite abrasive which coupled with a pattern with minimal draft will create a high wear rate. In cases where the binder has caused the sand to shrink the mould cavity as it cures or too little draft has been applied to the pattern with a poor surface finish it is not unknown for moulders to apply "gentle" persuasion with rubber mallets to encourage release.
I know of wooden patterns from which many tens, if not hundreds, of moulds have been produced with little wear and tear. I also know of patterns which have been returned to the client in CKD form in the production of "one off".

Have checks been made to ensure such a change wont negate the grandfather rights 76079 has for operating over NR metals?

God forbid that Mr Oldfords wonderful driving wheel pattern should return to the trust in 'CKD' form

Readers might like to know the 82045 sales stand will be in attendance at the SVR Autumn Gala this coming weekend.

The latest news is now posted on http://www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-sept10.html Details of our quiz are also there with prizes of footplate rides of various lengths.
Great weekend at the SVR gala despite some awful weather on Friday. Thank you to all who helped and supported our fund raising efforts.

    Regards
    Barbara

I understand that the group has most, if not all the engineering drawings. Are you considering producing a 3D model, possibly partly from laser surveys, so this can then be used in the future, and could also be used as a good tool to display what you are producing, current progress etc.

I would have hoped the monthly updates along with the photographs would be enough to illustrate the progress we're making in the real world. If some kind person wants to do similar in the cyber-world feel free.
