Personally I'd just use a bit of rag, and leave the spotted hankies to Claude Greengrass. But if you really do want something like that, they're pretty easy to get hold of.

BTW, plenty of people wore cloth caps back in the day, it would've only been towards the end of steam that they started to become associated with old people. I find having something on me head stops it ending up like a chimney sweep!

  2. Of course the diesel boys (and girls) can get away with wearing a lot less :smt119 :smt119 :smt119[attachment=0:eek:w5d48hn]oops.jpg[/attachment:eek:w5d48hn]

Just as a matter of interest,

Has anybody seen the cloth caps that the Shed Shop sell at NYMR? I believe they are firing caps, but I have never heard any tales or seen any proof of them being issued on BR?

    Anybody?

    Thanks
    Callum

Haven't read through all of this topic, but there was a reference early on to the effect that John Beesley didn't have a website.

This is incorrect as he can be located at:- www.footplateequipment.co.uk/

    Hello everyone,
I didn't see a thread elsewhere to ask this question, so here goes. I'm looking for some replacement Grease Top Cap badges and can't seem to find a supplier for the LMS or MR on the internet. Beesley and many of the others seem only to carry BR badges :(. Originally, I think I bought my old ones from Longleat, about 20 years ago. Sadly, they are worn out and falling apart. Any new supplier of these would be appreciated.

    Hi Fast,Flying,Steam,

Longleat still sell the LMS and MR oval capbadges. They aren't on the website, but are in the catologue. Just ring up and enquire - The number is on the website.

Hope this is of good use.

My memory can confirm that the BR ones are a copy of what was issued to train crew although the J R Gaunt ones tended to have a different fastening to the long split pin on the replicas.

But, what did the big four issue to crews on their caps? And, what did the pre-grouping companies issue, if anything?

The LMS one that Gomm used to do looks like it might be something that would be worn but didn't the LMS also have a badge with the initials?

As for all the other oval cap badges, they don't look 'kosher' to me, but what do I know?

    Anyone help?

Isn't the whole idea of a crew uniform something that started towards the later days of the LMS? Maybe a bit sooner on the GWR?
Those badges are just something to sell in preserved railway shops. I doubt many have any basis in history.

The Southern Railway "ENGINEMAN, SR" Badges are a replica of what the footplate crews had on the Southern.

I think the GWR had an embroided oval patch on their caps/lapels. I am unsure of the the LNER had, but I think the LMS men had the oval capbadges that are commonly seen for sale (replicas).

Would anyone be able to know of a website that sells the black thick donkey jackets for the autumn/winter time. There is 1 that I found on Surplus & Outdoors based in Kidderminster, but it's currently out of stock.

    Any information would be great.

    Cheers

    Hi Jeff,

You can usually find them online! Army and Navy surplus shops sell them. If you can find them there, they aren't really that expensive. Although they can be if you don't look in the right places!

Yes I have one, and they are rather nice hats to wear as they are comfortable on the head. There sold as firing hats in the shed shop, but are known amongst us as Pork Pie hats, if you wish to purchase one from the Shed Shop I'll PM you with the details, as they do phone orders.
