Daniel Adamson & Co loco's.

    I am researching the history of the steam tug-tender "Daniel Adamson" and as such am also amassing a comprehensive background o the man, Daniel Adamson who as you may all know, was an apprentice to Hackworth.

    I am aware that Adamson's engineering works build loco's also. I was wondering of any are still in existence?
    I have the following info relating to his engineering and loco works:
    Adamson, Daniel & Co. Newton Moor Iron Works, Hyde, Manchester
    According to Lowe boiler manufacture was the main activity and Adamson was an early advocate of steel for boiler construction. Ahrons (p. 166) notes that boilers with steel fireboxes were supplied to Maryport & Carlisle Railway in about 1862. Lowe lists output of locomotives between 1866 and 1896 and illustrates Oldham, an 0-4-0T supplied to Platt Bros. Others were supplied to the Oakley Slate Quarry in North Wales and were constructed to the 1ft 11½ gauge. The standard gauge locomotives had rectangular buffers which were rubber cushioned.

    Prince and Welsh Pony on the Festiniog both still have Adamson built boilers in them. I think thats as close as you'll get.

    Amazing that some of Adamson's boilers survive.

    Here are the other two pages.
    I also have hand written copies of the specs for the steam locos, complete with Beyer Peacock's prices, printed specs for the coaches right down to upholstery colours, prices for signalling, gas lighting, Guibal fans etc.
    Also a copy of the letter from Board of Trade allowing the line to open.
    I also have a Beyer Peacock loco builders plate dated 1885, the origin of which you could work out, plus an invitation pack to the opening ceremony , minus the actual invitation which was obviously used.

    Update, 10 years on, Prince’s boiler is still in service. Welsh Pony, which last steamed in 1940, is now being restored and has received a new boiler. The old Adamson boiler will be conserved.

    The specifications are in a bound folder with the name C.D. Fox on the cover. Charles Fox was the engineer for the Mersey Tunnel Railway and had one of the locos 'Fox' named after him. This was his personal copy and it ended up in the British Transport Commission library, from where it was originally disposed of. This was book two of I don't know how many.
    I got this from one of the on-line railwayana auctions after bidding £50 while not knowing what was in it.
