    There's no work for them

Lots of them no longer work

There is unlikley to be any demand from other FOC's to buy them so they aren't going to be helping the competition.

    Makes sense to me.

As a non-diesel bloke, but also as someone who saw these being built, and actually thinks they don't look half bad, esp. at the side of other boxes that have arrived since, can someone tell me why they are seemingly out of favour? i.e. expand a bit on Simon's post above?

Basically the freight market has declined with the recession and DBS's share has also declined since EWS bought out the BR operations.

EWS ordered more 66s than they needed - they had assumed little loss of traffic and a growth in the overal market size.

Class 60s are not modern technology - they are 20 years old at least in terms of design and the engines inside them are in need of overhaul and or replacement. A number have "put a leg out of bed" and if not reengined have no future,.

There are very few jobs that cannot be performed by a class 66.

as someone who normally doesn't prefer diesels I will never forget standing on Altrincham platform when one of them taking quite a big goods turn thundered through. :) Hope a couple of them have a chance of being preserved.

Spot the ones that were painted a pretty colour so must be saved...

On a more serious note, I presume these are the most shagged-out examples of the breed?

    Wasnt 60100 claimed ?

I find it pretty incredible that 72xxx diesels in France, 060DAs in Poland, M62s and 232 diesels across germany / eastern europe all 40 year old .. are a better proposition than the class 60 diesel ? I think this is EWS giving up without a fight.

yeah surely they can be at least worked abroad for euro cargo rail or hied out by dbs. if 56/58's can why not newer 60's. make 15 good ones out of these 20 and you would i would have thought a decent loco to hire out? i doubt any will be bought by the other freight operators in the uk as they are also losing work.

Are there any class 60 groups with a big bank balance to buy one?

I don't think it would cost much to buy one - to buy one and make it work, well that's another matter.

There is a class 60 preservation soc out there.

    http://www.c60pg.co.uk/

not sure if they will make a bid.

I thought the point was that the 60's should have had engine overhauls, but were in fact just run on into high hours until they failed.
At the other end of the scale on the tender list, are not the 09 diesel shunters--if restorable--useful pieces of kit for preserved lines? Dont they potentially go a bit faster than 08's? I bet Harry Needle will be thinking about them.

    Class 08 Max speed 15mph
Class 09 Max speed 27.5 mph

In 1992/93 some class 08 were modified in class 09 and were also given a max speed of 27.5 mph.

... but not given the bigger bearings that the orignal 09s had?

Thanks for that. I'd like to play Devil's Advocate and expand your point. With a few exceptions the preserved lines in this country are all former branch lines which never had high speeds on them.
As preservationists we wanted to reopen a favourite local line and did, but at the same time we also wanted to own a King, A4 or 9F and later a class 47, Western or Deltic. As a result many main line locos have been saved (I'm glad to say), but as only a few are permitted on the main line, all too often the majority of these giants potter about at 25mph or less hauling a maximum of six coaches. It strikes me as being a bit like Lawrence Olivier or Maria Callas joining a local Amateur Dramatic & Opera group in some back street hall.
