Even if it's more of a cosmetic replica, I still think the project has value and wish it success.

Can we add a 22 to the waiting/wish list too - unless I missed the news that Dapol are planning a 1:1 scale version ;-) ?

The West was fortunate in that many GW steam locos were preserved but not so lucky with the diesel hydraulics, Teddy Bears excepted. The 22s remain the largest single class of diesel not to make it into preservation and a sad-eyed "baby warship" on a local freight or a branch line passenger service was one of the most typical scenes of the Beeching era. The spoked wheels may be difficult to come by but there must be a few bits and bobs that survived.

I know to a full set of glass for a baby warship:lol:. Its a crying shame that D6319 got chopped up AFTER it was paid for.......

What about those that turned up on Yugoslavia ? I'm not sure they will all be preserved, there could be an option there.
Also some V200's went to Saudi and they are pretty good with the recycling, good chance the power unit survived.

Were any of those MAN powered though? I thought they were all Maybach engined ones.

Maybach MD650, probably still the same as theyve been stored since the early 1990's, there are 3 locos intact at the same location. (I thought someone here was proposing 2 47s to make a Falcon )

MAN engine of the class 22 was used in Sri Lanka as well wasnt it ?

Glad you posted that linky! I see theres serveral locos with a Mirrlees V12 JS12VT engine that would be suitable for back converting a class 31 into a 30. (theres a couple of suitable non refurbished examples left)

Getting back to the Class 23, I'm delighted to see this project going ahead. I've been saying for years that it could be done <relatively> easily by crossing a 20 & a 37, IF a suitable power unit could be sourced. I'm impressed by how little cash it'll be done for as well - yes, it'll not be suitable for the main line at that price, obviously, but frankly, so what? A Type 2 is limited in capacity anyway, certainly when considering loadings necessary to cover costs.

Good luck to all involved

I found this if it helps.. Railways Illustrated, January 2009 ran an article that the Sri Lankan railways were actually delaying scrapping of the M1 to see if there was interest from the UK for one of these power units. There's a badly spelt article in this link (The URLs in it work if you correct the spelling).
