i remember in steam railway a couple of years ago the reporting of the discovery of the one in Iraq. Cant remember if it said there were plans to bring it home or not. can imagine the goverment/armed forces etc would probably try and discourage a repatriation bid at the moment.

These locos should be arriving in the UK on Monday if the above report is still correct. Can anyone shed any further light on this mysterious cargo?

Too late - the boiler barrel was used in the Iraqi supergun.

I have just been reading the 8F article in the latest Heritage Railway. Some of it is a load of tosh. The only RH drive locos built were those that went to Turkey. No RH drive locos were built by Swindon for use on the GWR. You cannot convert a RH drive to a LH drive unless major work is done on the frames because the LH and RH frames are totally different to accomodate the reverser stand. (The Stanier Class 5 frames are similar). 48773 was not a RH drive loco originally.
On investigating further I found that the loco repatriated from Turkey, now restored and running, No 45160 could have had either the WD number 552 or 554 or one of the earlier batch 338-359. The loco WD number 561 was bought by the LMS in 1943 and received the number 8274, later 48274, which was withdrawn from BR in 1966. It never left the UK. Can someone explain how come the 8F at the Gloucs/Warks is known as 8274.

did the LMS not replace the loco numbers from loco's that were sent abroad with with loco's from later batches taking their numbers. a project i was briefly involved in around 10 years ago to do with turkish 8f's was looking at bringing one back which had had an LMS number but on further research i found that there had been a loco with the same number in BR stock (plus the 4). so we reasoned that loco's that were sent away had the their numbers transferred to newer loco's.

The locos that were sent to Turkey were ordered by the War Department and had nothing to do with the LMS and were never allocated an LMS number. A number of WD 8Fs were loaned to the LMS in 1940 but returned to WD ownership in 1941, including WD No 307 (LMS No 8233). Another batch of WD locos were loaned to the LMS in 1943 and recalled by the War Department in mid 1943, only to be sold to the LMS in November and December 1943. Amongst these was WD loco No. 561 which was given LMS No. 8274.

Does anyone know if any of the genuine Yankee tanks,WD 2-10-0's and S160's could ever be recovered from the jealously guarded Thessalonika(think that's how you spell it) 'museum' site in Greece?

I think that's a literal translation of 23E's singularly unhelpful post, above.
