This is the crying shame of it all. All of the Big Four and many of their constituents had maritime operations yet little of this maritime heritage has been preserved.
A pity the NRM didn't have a remit to save railway ships for the nation too.

We were offered Tattershall Castle back in the early 80s - if we could find somewhere to put it and fund it...and mercifully she found a museum home elsewhere. We wished we could have done something with Lincoln Castle, but the cold hard facts are that we don't have the resources - and that as I've said before, sadly in steamship preservation, there are no high-profile champions to help the cause.

I'm really sorry personally to see Lincoln Castle and Manxman follow the way of Seiont II, Reliant et al, but do wonder about the sustainability of it all. Don't get me started on big stationary steam engines...

I went to look at the pics - and wished I hadn't. I could have cried. I know what Frank says to be true - but dear oh dear. I hope Mr Johnson can sleep with his conscience, I find it very odd that it's always his brother who makes the statements...and the disclaimer, my comments, not my employers. If I'd had the choice between Ryde and Lincoln, it'd have been the latter - and now it looks like we'll lose both after they have both survived for so long. What a shame.

    I agree all very upsetting.

I just hope Mr Johnson has nightmares as he damn well deserves them.

Pictures of the engines (or twisted remains of them) now on the website. Somebody needs to swing for this.

I am personally appalled and feel physically sick at this unneccesaary action. Lets hope the magazines pick up on this next month and give Mr Johnson and Copes the bad press they deserve.

Having to spoken to a couple of magazine publishers today it seems that many other people share my views and there should be some interesting reading material out shortly.

We should remember that the last body to scrap a paddle steamer in this country was.....the National Maritime Museum, i.e. the paddle tug Reliant. Equally unforgiveable piece of vandalism.

Probably about time that the PSPS removed their 24th May Press Release from the front page of their website.

Such a sad, sad sight. The image that really got me was the one on the LCPS website showing bent and twisted con-rods off the engine.
Agree of course with many other posts, we cant save them all, the money just isn't there but steam engines that can be happily displayed in a museum? Come on!

    An absolute tragedy.

Incidentally (and no, I'm not knocking anyone, just asking a question) why do the PSPS own MV Balmoral? Last time I looked it didn't have paddles...?

    They don't

Waverley Steam Navigation own P S Waverley and M V Balmoral. Waverley Steam, in which the PSPS is a shareholder, is one of a number of companies assisted by the PSPS in their preservation efforts

My own personal view is that the issue of the motor vessel causes all sorts of completely unnecessary arguments, and that we should have become the Pleasure Steamer PS long ago - that is what we do.
