I thought WCR were running the Chester trip now 6233 is in charge. I think the confusion may be that this trip was originally intended to be a Tornado one and as such would have to be DBS?

Steam Dreams only use DBS with Tornado. I suspect David copied the details from May trip with Tornado.A case of human error.

Getting back to the topic,I understand that the run yesterday did acheve the fastest time with a twelve coach train over the measured distance of 31.5 miles from Carlisle. The time was 35mins20secs with a speed of 54.5mph at that point. All previous attempts have been logged to that point. For instance the Scot run on 09/5/09was with eleven in a time of 36:49.
    A really good effort yesterday.

I can well believe it: she really stormed through Penrith. Congratulations and thanks to all concerned!

Two Penrith pix added here, plus two from Crawford on the climb to Beattock:

I have been told that the northbound run from Carlisle to Beattock summit was also a fastest time but have not had any 'official' word on this.

Yes, it was one heck of a stonking run in both directions. The whole of the return journey was completed none stop except for the two book water stops and to set down passengers at Carlisle ie no out of course stops. The train even crossed straight into the goods loop at Carnforth without stopping, that in itself is a rarity. Peter Walker drove outwards and back as far as Carstairs where Bill Andrew took over. Performance wise this quite extraordinary tour has to rank up there with some of the very best. Mr Notley was on the train so I am sure full details will be revealed in a future "Steam Railway"

I concur- what a performance. 81.1 through Lockerbie northbound, and witnessing the station fly by was a memorable experience. It was the first (and last) time I'd seen her in black, and she looks striking: the livery accentuates her sheer bulk. It was one of the few trips I've been on where the locomotive had to work for pretty much 2/3 of the journey, with the steady climb from Larbert Jc. to Cumbernauld on the return producing a decent bit of chatter. I was privileged enough to be in coach J on the return, and could hear her loud and clear despite having the window closed to prevent driving rain from giving me and the couple sharing the table with me a soaking. It was also great to see some familiar faces, too. Congratulations to all involved for a splendid tour over the border, and I hope Bill Andrew enjoys his impending retirement (to be honest, I didn't know he'd taken over at Carstairs until later that evening). Now for a Bulleid over Shap...

I wonder, if you had the thrill of driving the likes of Sutherland, Lizzie and even the Earl and then had to give it up, would you actually enjoy it???

It appears that there has not been a run logged in preservation with 12 coaches before from Carlisle to Beattock. So technically it is the fastest with that load. However I need a running time to MP49.75 to confirm an all time fastest between the two points.Anyone able to provide this.

Probably not. I'd probably miss it like hell if I were in that position, but there are some people who love doing things so much that they know when its time to finally take a step back to enjoy the view. One of my friends on the train said that after enjoying 8,800 miles and numerous records behind 6233 in preservation, he thought that it may be time to call it a day and concentrate on another locomotive- he felt that anything else after the overhaul would be an anti-climax.

Right I am now in a position to provide the relavent figures.
Firstly I would like point out that these figures represent Five runs in preservation and are not ment to prove that one is better than another just to show what can be acheaved when everything is in ones favour.
I understand that apart from the rain on Beattock there was also a bout of primeing when leaving Carlisle so the start would not have been as sharp as it could have been to protect the engine.
    02/10/2010 46233 12/438/465 time from Carlisle to MP49.75 55:08 time from MP39.5-MP49.75 14:48
    29/09/2002 46201 11/397/420 started from Quintishill time from MP39.5-MP49.75 13:35
    13/07/2002 46233 11/394/425 time from Carlisle to MP49.75 51:22 time from MP39.5-MP49.75 12:20
    22/03/1997 60532 11/410/455 time from Carlisle to MP49.75 50:16 time from MP39.5-MP49.75 11:59
    21/03/1998 60532 10/360/385 time from Carlisle to MP49.75 45:16 time from MP39.5-MP49.75 10:17
This last run managed to run the 58miles from Carlisle to Abington loop start to stop in a well inside even time of 53:55.This will prove hard to beet.
I regard all these runs as coming from the top draw of preservation performance

which all makes it really disappointing that 6233 has been "withdrawn" according to letter from Steam Dreams. Can anyone say why?

60019 will do the Bristol trip on 7th Oct

A short but stunning clip, who says you cannot get effective shots from station platforms.

I just love that clip. The reaction of the guy with the trolley bag, expecting a normal train when that goes by says it all...
