Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation society

The Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation society has just purchased 3837 from Mole Valley district council where she has been standing for over 25 years behind Leatherhead leisure centre. We are now in the process of moving her to her new home where she will be fully overhauled into full working order
3837 is the works number for this Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0 saddle tank locomotive built in 1934 in Tyneside for Corby Iron and Steel works She was given the running number of 16 and worked there until 1969, 3837 then went to the Nene Valley Railway in 1974 and stayed there to 1981. She arrived at Leatherhead leisure centre in 1985, donated by the Biwater Group Limited of Dorking.

The engine is I understand to be shortly moved to Isfield on the Lavender Line where it will be restored. Apparently some serious fund raising is now essential in order to return the engine to steam operation, which according to the agreement entered into with Mole Valley District Council has to be completed within 5 years.

Is the boiler barrel ok on the loco? I see its been left out in the open without a dome cover and I wondered if there was corrosion there.

 

I thought the loco was supposed to be going to the Mid Hants?

The agreement with MVDC does not stipulate that is HAS to be completed within 5 years, it does not even say the loco HAS to be restored to working order! The owning society will do a full survey of the loco to see whether it can be economically restored to working order, if it is decided that it is not economically viable to restor the loco to working order, then it will no doubt be cosmeticall retored to a high standard.

As far as I know but there is hearsay that it was thin, Just wait and see.
