Just to let you guys out there know of the progress on MW Dolobran at Ruddington. A new smokebox has now been constructed and a new door manufactured. New hinges are in the process of being manufactured along with all the other bits and pieces which make up the smokebox furniture. Patterns have been made for the blastpipe and sandboxes and these items have now been cast and are in the process of being machined. The restoration group keeps battling on but we may have to wait until next year before Dolobran finaly steams.

2088 Sir Thomas Royden is still progressing steadily by the small band of die hard's at Rutland! Gauge frames have been delivered and will be fitted shortly with hydraulics and steam test to follow, probably in November now which is a shame as she will miss our gala on 23rd 24th October.

Also Vigilant has arrived and looks to be in splendid condition! She is to be restored to as original condition so no vac gear and wooden brake blocks! In the next few years should be able to have some fun with the wagons and her chuffing around!!

Glad to see this thread still going strong been away a while so will try to get back on track with updates from our little line.

Thanks for the update Gaz and good to have you back on the forum. Shame about Tommie but I guess it will be worth the wait once its done. So is it just AB1931 and Cranford for the gala or have you something else up your sleeve? Could make a good weekend with Tyseley on the Sunday (Peckett No1 of course).

On another note I see Avonside 1772 Askham Hall has moved to Threlkeld Mining Museum. I wonder if they have any plans on a return to service :).

Progress on Henry Ellison (the 16inch Barclay at the Ecclesborne Valley Raiwlay) has been limited to the sandblasting of the frames now since the tank, cab and boiler. Some of the wasted plate work has also been marked out for removal and repair. It is planned to fit a rear bunker to this locomotive so that it can travel the whole length of the line, although it would need re coaling between trips, because of the rear bunker this can be done using the onsite Komatsu with its digger attachment. I will take some pictures, but due to work and uni I am unable to get there unill the 16th/17th.

Have a visitor in mind and probably coming in but will confirm! 1931 and the diesel fleet as we have not had much luck with steam at the RRM this year! Never mind lots of wagon's that need knocking about and we are a friendly bunch!

I believe the terminology is thus: All J94s were Austerity tanks, but not all Austerity tanks are J94s. Same basic design, but not part of the LNER/BR fleet.

Absolutely Selsig, the Austerity saddle tanks were originally designed for the War Department during WW2 and 75 were subsequently bought by the LNER who designated them J94. But only those 75 of the total class build of 485 should be officially referred to as J94 and only 2 of the genuine J94's survived into preservation - 68077 and 68078.
Such a shame that some railways still feel the need to put a BR number on everything instead of an alltogether more colourful, and original, industrial livery. Ah well, some people can't be helped!

A J94 is ex LNER. Also known as Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0 sadlle tanks... personaly I prefer calling them J94s, but in this thread we may end up with a flame war. You cant simply call them austerities as that could be any War Department Locomotive such as 8F (the ones built under war department for the first world war), WD 2-8-0 (essensialy a simplified 8F design with a paralel boiler and other simplifications) or the famous WD 2-10-0s.

You can call them J94's if you want. It's your prerogative and you won't get a flame war. However, they were officially referred to as Austerity 0-6-0ST's and that is what knowledgeable people still refer to them as.

More interestingly, what is happening (if anything) with Littleton No. 5?

When you get into industrials, you'll recognise the finer differences between the Avonsides, Hunslets, etc.......

Littleton No.5 is currently at Bitton on the Bristol Suburban Railway, hasn't been at the GCR since the late 1970s. As far as I know it is stored, but happy to have an update from someone connected with Bitton.
