Cathedrals Express 09 October 2010; 6233(?) Euston - Chester t1009b

On UK steam there now seems to be some doubt whether it will be 6233 or 60019.

 

It depends on when/if 6233 is repaired.......

Has ran a successful trip to Stirling since then on the 2nd.

I hear that there has been a minor problem that the team are working to correct, but they did not feel able to do it in time to be down in London for Thusday. However I understand it is hoped that 6233 will move south on Friday.

 

Was on the Royal Scot on saturday and 6233 put in a storming performance. Proper coal must have been used for that.

 

I could only hazard a guess that there may have been some damage to the grate if the fire had clinkered badly, but like I said, that's a guess and I should know better :nono:

 

I believe it was a hot bearing but I know no more than that which came from a good source. We booked on the Chester trip months ago to get a run with the Duchess out of Euston (my first since 1964) and almost the last run before a major overhaul. I will be really p....d off if it doesn't appear.

Ticket and timeings received by email today, letter states "Our booked locomotive 6233 Duchess of Sutherland is scheduled to haul this train."

Yes, I telephoned Steam Dreams this afternoon who confirmed that assuming it develops no further problems the loco on this trip will be the Duchess.

6233 reported on time ex Euston; uncertain if there is or isnt a 37 on the rear, conflicting messages!

 

6233 passed Kings Langley on time (08:35 approx). No diesel on back. Speed not great as following a Tring local.

Passed Althorpe, south of Long Buckby, at 09:44, at a reasonable speed.

 

Reported left Rugby at 1021.

 

On train reports from brother Don tells me that it's been hill climbing at 58 - 60 mph, with a max of 74½ at Cheddington. Load circa 470 tons.

And, as reported here already, no box. So it looks like being a real steam dream instead of a diesel nightmare.
