Brittanias were known for running without their tenders, but not without a cab ...

I did a quick search on fotopic on the off chance that someone captured it today, and luckily Tim Fenton did:

An excellent job by the team at Crewe.

70000 was blowing off nicely at 4pm whilst the safety valves were being adjusted.

Excellent news. Can't wait to see 70000 and 70013 together when Ollie is fixed. When are main line trials due late October/November?

Great news. That's her first movements since the late 90s isn't it?

Since late summer 1997 if I remember correctly. Excellent news though either way :)

Great to see such progress on 70000. I see she's pencilled in for Steam Dreams' trip to Exeter on 30th Oct. Is this a realistic prospect, or will it take a little longer to run-in and debug the loco?

70000 now replaced by 60019 on Steam Dreams' Exeter trip on 30-October, but 70000's mainline test run shouldn't be too far off now.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

It's great to see her back in steam at last. Hope to get a run behind her soon. She was a real beast when she came South on her last ML career. Will she become known as the Stealth Brit though in her black livery? Depends if they run her with Nameplates whilst she carries black. Nearly booked on the Exeter trip as SD were saying on the 7th Oct that 70000 would be on it...............

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Steam Beano seems to reckon it will have mainline tests then fit airbrakes..... isn't that a bit silly? A lot of replumbing and resetting up... would it not make sense to get it all sorted first?

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Well, don't forget that any new installation has to have the design approved by the VAB and then the installation signed off for build conformance. Obviously the key thing is to make sure the locomotive works ok still on vacuum brakes before the air brakes are integrated with that. I think also that this is the first steam locomotive that L&NWR Heritage have equipped with dual air and vacuum brakes, so throw in the learning process for that and I can understand why they have gone for initial test running with just the vacuum brakes.

    Regards,

    Dan

Despite the system not being completed I believe that a significant amount of the plumbing for the airbrake system has been installed.
