Excellent shots David considering the lighting conditions.
It just goes to show once again what can be done with careful planning and common sense applied.

Can someone please clarify what route 5043 did take? And was it true that the earl was allowed in to birmingham new street without steam?

On the run from Hellifield down to (just short of) Carlisle Station, I used some running software on my iPhone to track route, speed and elevation for the train.

The results can be seen here:
    http://runkeeper.com/user/SteveFromGWR/activity/18515642

I also tracked the return climb past Mallerstang to Ais Gill:
    http://runkeeper.com/user/SteveFromGWR/activity/18511729

The page has two main things - a map of the route, and a graph showing speed and elevation for the route.

If you hover your cursor on either the speed line (blue) or elevation (green) then you will get a small window showing you the exact detail at that point, and the map will show you exactly where the point being referenced is. The map is Google Maps so you can magnify it as you wish, and change it from map to satellite pics, etc

    Hope you find it interesting.

And thanks everyone who has shown that this was all The Earl's own doing, without any shoving.

It was a fantastic day out, congrats to everyone at VT, WCRC and NR for making it happen the way it did. Nice to meet Saltydog again, sorry I didn't see any of you others to say hello to.

Steve that is pretty smart software and data, thanks for posting.

On board from soon after Hellifield to Blea Moor tunnel.
Sorry about the abrupt start, had uploaded before I realised that I had not put in a short clip leaving Hellifield..

Nothing unpalatable about it for me. I'm pleased to hear it did the job unassisted. You can't blame people for being sceptical when a duff appears on the back at the last minute, but I'm glad to hear it was just there to provide additional load. ;-) I shall look forward to more such performances in the future.

Thanks Bob, I always knew it was possible, with the right fireman and coal. Can't wait to go into 12A on Monday and put a few Midland Region men back in their boxes. Would be nice if you did come back sometime maybe double heading with a hall or 5029. Its hard for us northern GW men to get our proper exhaust/pretty locomotive fix. I'm going to take some credit for making sure the rails were spotless for you too!

    all the best well done

    Mike

No, of course I wouldn't, which is why I put the King first in my list, which I believe is an 8P, the same as a Duchess or the Duke. I fully agree with you that the 7P rating of a rebuilt Jubilee is rather generous, as I've always thought of them as not having that much more than a Black 5. I suppose it's just fun to compare the 'Pride of Swindon' with that from Crewe, Doncaster, Eastleigh, etc.

While all are 8P's, i believe the Pacifics have a not unnoticable higher tractive effort than 6024, not that you'd notice it on the Kings stamping ground as adhesion is more of an issue than long periods of high power output, that said i would like to see a rematch with the King crewed by the WCRC hands who know how to handle Swindon machines as i believe crew unfamiliarity was part of the problem with 5029 & 6024 in the north.

The TE of a King is up there with Princess Coronations, A4s etc, are you thinking more of DBHP output?

My video from Helwith bridge is now finally up here:-

Apologies to Bob and the rest of the guys who maintain this stunning loco, my video editing software has compressed it somewhat during processing as it was shot in 16/9 and has ended up 4/3 aspect ratio....

    Neil.

Edit, I have now sorted out the new editing software and have added the final edit here:-

Quite possibly yes, i do know a King won't sustain such an output for as long as the others anyway.
