RTC website indcates Leander is rostered for this tour, UK Steam has an option of Leander or Lizzie, and 6201 Society has Lizzie confirmed. Confusing!

Looks like a good day out whatever the loco though.

Having read all the stuff about boxes in recent weeks I'm starting to wonder if I have wasted the best part of £400 for a steam hauled tour that isn't. Anyone know if the box is going to infest this tour?

As a diesel has to haul the stock and loco into Lime Street, and heating will be required, then its a fair bet that the diesel will be there all day.

Very unlikely to be 6201, I believe the loco is withdrawn for overhaul is it not?

Only withdrawn for repairs according to the Society's website. Expected to be out of action for several weeks from 16th Sept so could be ready

    by 12th Dec.

Thanks for your comment Ralph.I would add that if the train is more than NINE then a Jubillee will be overloaded for the route and a box would have to be provided to push as well as heat.6201 possibly could do a dozen but heat has to be provided somehow if there is no generator.

I stand corrected this one is going via the L&Y so it could get away with 10.I understand that 5407 has gone this way in the past with this load.I thought it was going via Diggle.Sorry

As there are fewer tours in the winter and some stock is capable of being steam heated, why not use it?

Some support coaches are no longer piped for steam, but anyway the diesel also provides that extra security and the electric heating is more reliable and dry. How often in colder weather do you see, on preserved lines, the windows of coaching stock all permanently steamed up, and the interiors dripping wet.

Extra coach without passenger capacity. Restriction of train length at Lime Street would mean having to remove a coach to allow for it, losing 40 to 60 seats, hence a non starter. Also the fact that you would have this thing roaring away at the back, and then on the return at the front. I can see that going down well with those who would like to hear the steam loco. At least the diesel stays at the back.

And the diseasal is how long? Self defeating argument. Genny car can be moved if there is a will.

As has already been pointed out, a diesel is needed to bring the train in whether the genny is there or not.

Including a generator coach in the formation does not have to remove a passenger carrying vehicle. As West Coast has at least one barrier coach in their formations this could easily be removed allowing the generator coach to take its place. The support coach could then be used as the brake vehicle like when we have single headed steam over the Devon banks.

Problem with that is 1 genny van into 4 or more tours on some Saturdays doesn't go, also a genny van has a slight traction issue with leading the ECS into Lime St!, you think NR will let you propel from Edge Hill ? get real people.

Mods can we do something about the 'stuck record' posters infesting each thread with the same crap ?, im sick of looking at info about upcoming tours and finding the threads been infested by whinging about diesels 3 posts in despite there already being a dedicated thread for the subject.

The subject of boxes on steam tours is a valid point to some extent but not every thread please.

I have some empathy with your view, but I'm not sure anything can be done unless people actually break the rules of the forum.

I can fully understand that people will get sick and tired of the same old views being re-cycled, but if the mods try to curb it, people will scream 'this is a discussion forum.' It's catch 22 I'm afraid. Sorry.

    I agree!!!

But I also suggest that if people want to discuss this issue then prehaps everyone who wishes to discuss this issue views and comments in this thread that Saltydog has started - http://railways.national-preservation.com/showthread.php/27457-Steam-Tours-And-Diesels. .
As John said this is a discussion forum and we are not here to censor free speach it's just that IMO it seems a bit strange that this subject keeps appearing in various topics in the Mainline thread but not many people have chosen to comment in the thread dedicated to the to this very subject.
