    Or a better option would be to redo the lettering on 1618s tender to 1806, and paint 31806 into olive green to match. That way the mid hants won't have to put 1618s tender through the paintshop in 6 months time, and 1806 will be in a suitable livery to run with 850.

    The problem with painting 31806 into Southern Livery, is that it received new front frames and cylinders by BR. There are detail differences to the original front end and a BR standard class 4 chimney. So for pure authenticity it would not be right to run in green.

    If my memory serves me right whether by design or just a quirk of fate the Bluebell locomotives are all original, but all the MHR moguls have the modified BR front end.

    If the tender is being borrowed for just 6 months it seems a waste of money, taking into account the cost of transport and repainting the tender twice! 6 months from now is the end of May and with Easter quite late in April, how much running will the loco do between then and now? The Mid Hants isn't particularly short of locos to cvover the winter period, and surely it will not take 6 months to rebuild the damaged tender?

    Far better to have 31806 in BR lined black to continue the later BR theme that the MHR are creating 50s and 60s

    Has it been stated by 'The Management' that it's going to be repainted?
    It's perfectly possible to use the tender and engine over the winter to get the engine run in. I can't imagine that the mis-matching liveries would be too much of a problem to the passengers - they're more likely to be looking for a warm carriage! Once the spring comes around and the engine will be needed on a more day to day basis, it's own tender should be ready and there would be no cost outlay to the MHR for repaints of the loaned tender. Just a thought...

    Isn't it 1625 that has the modified front end (with outside steampipes) while 1806 is correct? Remember that 1806 is different from all the others because it was a rebuilt K class. If they'd done her back to a K, the tender wouldn't have been an issue! 1806 is close enough in appearance to its original condition it could pass off in Maunsell green, just as 541 passess off for original Maunsell form, 1625 would never look right in green.

    As far as i can remember, 31806 has a different more rounded cab from the other engines, this is how you can tell it was a rebuilt river class, i dare say that in any livery it will look like an southern mogol , what matters is that the bluebelle have loaned an tender to enable this loco to be completed it shouldnt be a hard job to repaint the tender after all the BR livery is not the most exacting is it? ,and once the proper tender has been repaired then i dont thing that there will be any time limit on getting the loaned one put back into green, unless the bluebelle are going to give 1618 a repaint themselves whilst the engine is stored?

    All the Mid Hants Moguls have the curved BR frames and new cylinders plus outside steam pipes and the two locos on the Bluebell 1618 and 1638 have the Southern frames and cylinders with inside steam pipes.

    So livery wise it would be incorrect to have any Southern livery on the MHR based locos with this arrangement .However .

    Latest I've heard on the tender issue is that everytime 31806 is steamed a fee will have to be paid to the Maunsell Locomotive Society for the use of their tender. This fee however will go straight towards the overhaul of Stowe. Also, out of ticket U class no.1618 is to be painted BR lined black so that when the tender comes back it can be matched with the loco and be used for displays/nightshoot purposes similar to how Stowe was used when painted Malachite green.

    Maybe one day 31618 & 31806 could be paired together at some point in the future? I remember some years ago seeing 31874 & 31625 paired together and in BR lined black and they looked great together.

    Nah a relative of the family works for the Maunsell Locomotive Society and the repaint of 1618 is due to start soon. It's also being done to give the loco some much needed publicity in the same way that the repaint gave to Stowe. Monies raised from this and the fees from 1618's tender will go towards the overhaul of the Schools class.
