Terrier liveries

    Hi all

    I've been meaning to get into kit-building loco's for a while, and after trying for several on ebay I've got a Keyser's Terrier kit. Obviously, having not yet received it I'm thinking about livery. I've got a couple of hornby terriers in GWR and improved engine green, so does anyone have any suggestions (and ideally, directions to photos) for a terrier livery that's a bit unusual? Essentially I'm after anything that isn't BR black, southern green, LBSCR green or GWR green.

    Perhaps you could try the FYN (Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway) livery - as seen here.

    What about LSWR - two Terriers wound up there to run the Lyme Regis branch (668 Clapham - became LSWR 735 and 646 Newington - became LSWR 734). As transferred, 735 had the condensing pipes; 734 didn't. The Westinghouse pumps on teh cab side were removed and replaced with vacuum ejectors. At various times both later receieved a Drummond boiler, with safety valves springing from the dome (not an aesthetic improvement IMHO...) and cable-operated equipment for running motor trains. 735 also got an Adams stovepipe chimney, just to complete the look mongrel look!

    Livery for both was the Drummond "Royal Green", elaborately lined in chocolate , black and white, with L S W R on the side tanks and the number on the bunker..

    (734 later lost its Drummond boiler, went to the Isle of Wight as FY&N No 2, became SR W2 "Freshwater", got an extended bunker, came back to the mainland, spent some time as pub sign in Hayling and eventually went back to the IoW as W8 "Freshwater", where it still exists and is in steam).

    As with all Terriers - get a good photo of the one you want to model!

    Did any Terriers get sold to the SECR? I dont think that SECR plain green would be correct
    There are numerious liveries to choose from, Rother valley blue , to Newhaven harbour company black as well as all the LBSCR liveries and others

    A book I can recommend you look at is 'Stroudley and his Terriers' by Tom Middlemass. It has details of each of the terriers.

    IIRC Waddon was sold to the SECR, renumbered no. 751 and was painted in full SECR livery to begin with. I think it was later repainted in to grey during the first world war. It had various modifications during it's SECR ownership, including gaining a Wainwright boiler.

    How about Stroudley Goods Green. Fenchurch is reputed to have been painted this livery when sold to the Newhaven Harbour Co.
    Or what about an industrial livery? 2 were sold to the Edge Hill Light Railway. And then of course there is Boxhill in its experimental light green as a 2-4-0 now that would be a challenge.

    If you were really brave you could paint it in GWR wartime black as two ended up in that state... not sure it go down well!!!

    maybe in WWI War Department livery? Some second(/Third?) hand terriers ended up in war use.

    For something really 'out there,' you could paint it as an NSWGR N(67) Class. Here in New South Wales, we had a batch of these locomotives. For details of their service life, look at page 8 in the following link. The date withdrawn shows when they left capital stock and entered life as workshop & depot shunters or had coal grabs fitted. Condemning date & scrapping date more closely reflects actual withdrawal form any kind of service.

    Please note that every NSWGR steam locomotive was renumbered in August 1924. Every locomotive to enter service after that date, up to the mid 1990s, uses the same numbering system.

    In NSWGR revenue service, these locomotives were painted black, with red buffer beams. They were lined in red & straw, the straw being outside the red.

    Theres a couple of KESR livieries as well like Bodiam's at the momentand If I recall one with the number in the middle of the tank with the intials KESR over the top of it. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

    you have also got to add to the equation what is the model going to be constructed as, an A1, or an A1X, this will also limit the liveries you can carry, unless you decide to not keep it strictly authentic

    I saw a black and white photo in a book once which had a Terrier in the liviery I described and it did look like that but as its black and white I can't tell what the actual colour was. But you can do the one in the image as thats what it also had in KESR early preservation days (I think, if not it was similar).

    Wow, what a choice! It could be a lifetime's work to research and reproduce all the different Terrier liveries. What other classes can claim such diversity? GWR 57xx PT? The 'umble Austerity 0-6-0ST and its derivatives, perhaps, or a few of the most common NG types?

    And that's before you start doing the "non prototypical" liveries worn in preservation - for example, to name but two, No 55 as an A1X in Stroudley livery; or 672 in Marsh umber with a name ... (you know who you are!)

    (Interesting philosophical question: is Stepney in Stroudley livery actually "non prototypical"? :) )
