Yes indeed, I forgot to mention in my earlier post how grateful I was to all those who were providing updates which were then relayed to me by my wife. If only we had had this technology in 1983 when 'Leander' and the Midland Compound ran over the S & C when those of us up the line had no idea of the problems at Hellifield!

 

Austin, remember that well and it was freezing at Hellifield too. Water filling problems, faulty pump if i remember correctly?

Nice video's and picture's chaps, as mentioned it was a rather fraught day with all the chopping and changing that took place but everyone had a great time and it's nice to know that all the prep that took place at Carnforth on Saturday didn't go to waste and the tour still ran, again full credit to WC & NR!

The loco's performed really well and one thing I will say, it was a great honour to have the pleasure of being on the footplate with Bill on 44871 on what was his last passenger working. Watching him in action on the climb from Barnsley was truely magic with the rail conditions deteriorating but once we hit the straight we then started to pull away.

The wife and I spent a cold day in the snowy cutting at Settle Junction. 27 years later, she still has NO interest in coming out with me to wait for a steam train going by. I wouldn't have missed it for the world, even though, like many on Sunday no doubt, my photo didnt really come out due to the fading light.

IIRC, something had gone horribly wrong with the wires on the WCML, and diverted traffic was making a bad situation worse.

 

Hello, are you able to confirm who was driving 45407 on the outward leg from Preston to Manchester please?

 

Albert was on 54 (leading) at least to the first water stop at Denton.

I believe he and Bill swapped a couple of times during the day though.

just an after thought, I took my camera as well as the video cam to Preston Saturday night for three trains, got a couple of stills of the black fives parked up for the night, they came out quite well even if they were parked behind posts, had hoped they would shunt about like last year, they just rolled in and parked, there was trouble starting the generator for the crew to have a cuppa, phots here:-
