Really cannot imagine a huge queue of people wanting to pay for that as opposed to repairing or even replacing the cylinder. As has been said elsewhere; once the pattern is paid for then a large part of the cost is accounted for.

Yes, the rebuilt Bulleids were heavier than the originals, hence why the only route west of Exeter they were permitted on was down to Plymouth.

Not really, if you're referring to a Bulleid when you've got a loco that steams that freely its no effort whatsoever.

61624's point is that the starting effort and power output required for a preserved line is about that of a large industrial, which is what youd get from only two modestly sized cylinders left on your lighter than light pacific
My point is that with a large grate area (which has to be covered or the fire wont burn) its not efficient, -this large grate once covered will produce via mr Bulleids excellent boiler more steam than your cylinders can turn into usefull work, a situation imaginatively termed being 'over boilered' . in practice your burning coal to little effect as the thing would be blowing off all the time...

A two cylinder rebuild would have had at least 19 x 28 inch cylinders as opposed to 16 x 24 (?) ones.... so actually the wheels would have been useless too (crank pin in wrong position)

I thought that the Bulleid valve gear reduced / eliminated Hammer Blow. The rebuild's normal gear didn't. A couple of tons spread over 6 axles would probably be less significant than this.

Mm, isn't hammer blow mainly dependent on the thrust from the pistons & the effectiveness of the balance weights on the driving wheels? Although I do appreciate that there are metal components moving within the valve gear, they are smaller than the connecting rods etc. I thought that the idea of the chain drive was to minimise maintenance (a good idea, even if it didn't quite work out) & reduce weight, more than anything else

Yes i think you're right enough Mark.
Love em as i do its ironic that we end up discussing the Niceties of Mr Bulleids engines on a thread devoted to an engine intended to replace them, designed by people who thought Bulleid had 'lost the plot'.

It's where as an internet discussion/argument grows longer, the greater the probability of someone mentioning Hitler or the Nazis or drawing some sort of comparison.

Discussion on this site used to be quite interesting, now it is becoming less germain.
Better be careful incase anyone gets upset, folks.

Seems to me there are several BB/WC engines which could be experimented with if some owner was so disposed and had the cash/backing, but where would it stop?

Let's just get some properly built before we start trial and error.
How did the 6MT grate compare with the Bullied design?

Thanks NorthernSteam and Sheff. There must be something in the Steam era Psyche which is drawn to Warminton on sea (sounds SR ISH)
I am confident that a Clan could do more useful work in everyday service with a given amount of coal than a wc/bb and if you dont believe me stump up some cash to build one so it can be proved... ?

Some one must of heard, checking out the website yet more parts delivered....

Meanwhile, back to the subject of this thread.

The website has had a small revamp and they have had an original part donated for the motion!
Little by little this project is coming together.
Check the website for further details.

Decembers Railway Magazine declares that this group are looking for a home where they can build the machine.
So Mr Rileys emporium is not suitable? I guess it must be too far from the workers base of Bristol area.
Has anyone any ideas of suitable places they can find accomodation, in that area apparently.

What about Yeovil, or somewhere in Bristol Docks?

Depends how far they want to move from Bristol. Kemble Airfield in South Glos usually has units for lease in the Hangars there. The Bristol Aircraft Museum uses one of them to house their collection. Has a rather nice ex RAF Britannia parked outside. :) Has good site access. In actual fact just down the road they (BRB I suppose) have the old Coates Rail Yard for sale, though site access to that is not particularly easy. There were also hangars for lease at Hullavington, though from personal experience these were not in great shape.

Other than that, I can think of anywhere. There is of course the Avon Valley Railway, but I think they have more than enough work on their site. Ditto Blunsdon.

With the greatest of respect, a non-railway site would be by far the best for the group; how many railways have the space for something else that is only going to be a pile of bits for the next decade or so at least.
