Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

We will NOT be doing line side passes this November. John Peake who works for me I think answered that in his email.

The main reason is the administrative burden involved. We cannot do passes for MCR due to the amount of areas which have limited clearance. I started putting a plan together of all publically accessible areas but then fell fowl of copyright issues with OS. That is now resolved and I will do my best to put a package together for future events. Something along the lines of CVR passes, maybe access up at the Junction then a map for the rest of the Cauldon Branch.

I must stress that the costs of these will reflect the additional risk and time its take to administer. My idea is that a line side pass bought on its own should be no less that a ticket price, bought in conjunction with a ticket then I think we should be able to do a special rate.

However when this has been worked out it will be put up on our website.

Although it's a shame that there won't be on-the-day passes available for the CVR section, its quite understandable. There's only so many volunteer staff and a great deal of work to be done. Issuing lineside passes is a time-consuming task that needs to be done by a senior person who could be much better employed on other things. Most of us photographers will be concentrating on the new MCR section anyway, so it's not such a big loss.

May I suggest that if a few CVR/MCR folk were in the vicinity of the best photographic spots, they could hand out leaflets, sell timetables and travel tickets, give advice (other spots, good access points, places to avoid), proffer a collecting tin and generally show the flag for the railway.

Two new webcams have been added to our website in time for the gala. There is now a camera at Leekbrook Junction and one at Apesford Crossing courtesy of an avid rail supporter.

Why not start an annual lineside pass scheme?

May I ask is there any possibility of publishing a roster so that those of us who may wish to ride certain locos, and/or photograph them as well can plan our vists, whether at weekend or weekday as fully as possible

Further to this, for those planning to visit on later weekends (I can see why as some diesels get to play as well! :)) the timetables covering these have now been confirmed. They should be going online very soon.

I wonder if Sunday evening's quintuple header will be a sign of the madness to come with the mixed gala? I seem to remember a 37+S160+DMU (all powering) combination a couple of years back!

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

Did you like that? It's not the first time that combo has been mentioned! :) I must admit that (speaking to the organisers) it was a bit of an accident really. Only on the day was it noticed that the three noisiest locos were together on a single train! Anyone up for a re-run when 6046 returns to steam....?

Seriously though, the "mad" combinations of 2008 were criticised by several at the time as "not in keeping" as it were, so I wouldn't expect anything beyond the "loco convoys" at half six (which is only to get several engines back to bed at once). Plus for this gala at least, the Cauldon trains are too long to accommodate double headers, because they are already effectively double headers, what with having engines on the back...

I can't speak for S160's, but being on board the 104 going up the new line certainly didn't disappoint in the sound department! And when the 37's been running from Bradnop to Apesford, it has been heard at Cheddleton Station, that's enough madness for one gala!!

Was only at Cheddleton station for that one unfortunately (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwh5_2zi7Ik), called in on the way back from Foxfield, but it was pretty spectacular to watch, I've not seen acceleration like that outside of OO scale! Can't say I'd approve of the mad combinations day in day out, but it certainly makes a change! :D

There is also this site, the OS Get-A-Map:-

    http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/

Click on the large pink circle on the right, type Froghall in the search box and away you go. The line seems to be crisscrossed with public rights of way. If you are printing the maps off this site I do find it better to use a screen capture program on the maps and save and print from a JPG as if you use the print facility on the website the images appear quite small.

Anyway, will see you there Frank :thumb:

I hope that those of you who came along today have enjoyed your day. We have been beset by problems some avoidable and some unforeseen.

We are currently trying to rectify some of these issues overnight and hopefully tomorrow will be less disruptive.

Great day, despite some failures and late running...the CVR is an amazing railway, especially in spectacular late November sunshine :)
