It gives you all an excuse to visit Norfolk, we have 3 excellent railways for you to visit. The MNR is a great line and a 'steam gala' should be great. I also urge you to take you cameras a few miles north to the NNR or Whitwell, you won't regret it!

To be honest the GCR isn't really a cure-all for mainline testing; whilst you can run up to 60, the line's length means that this can only be for a limited period. Experience would tend to show that the real test for an engine is running for extended periods - i.e. endurance rather than high-speed flit. Tornado still ran a crosshead hot when it first went out on the mainline, and I can think of another engine which underwent an intensive running-in sesh at the GCR, only for the bogie to run a hot box on its first test run.

That's not to say that the GCR is of no value to mainline testing, but in this case it may just have been deemed better to take the engine to a line that the crew are familiar with.

With reference to 6023 and 6024 meeting: how much longer before 6024 needs it's next overhaul? IIRC it's likely to be withdrawn next summer - or am I confusing it with another? In any case, it's coming fairly soon. Any meeting of the Kings on the mainline will need to happen sooner rather than later.

Is anyone thinking of running a tour to Didcot with 6024 before 6023 goes to MNR? Could be the sort of thing Pathfinder have done rather well in the past: diesel from Brum to Bristol, picking up punters along the way, 6024 in charge Bristol to Didcot and back, out via Bradford-on-Avon and Newbury, return via Badminton, then back to Brum dropping off as outward.

It may literally be "one in - one out" as according to UKsteam 6024's mainline certificate expires in April next year and that assumes that when 6024 goes in for its winter maintenance its in a condition where its worth running for a couple of tours early next year rather than getting straight on with the overhaul.

The two Kings could well meet on the main line as there is the possibility if all is well of an extension to its main line certificate for one year taking it up to March 2012.

But are there any £££s left to even be able to contemplate starting the overhaul??

Good question, but one that probably belongs in a thread about 6024, rather than 6023...

They picked up a couple of minor cosmetic bits from us yesterday. Work is progressing well, but they, just like the rest of us, are a bit hampered by the weather.

Who decided to play with toys in the winter that need water to make them go!

According to Steam Railway 6024's ticket expires in March but they are to seek a 12 month extension, so maybe a double header with 6023 is a possibility in the autumn, Penzance please!!

    60007 + 6023 Might be a a good combination. 5029 & 60019 looked good last Summer.

Bear in mind that 2011 is a tour of preserved lines and a chance to see and savour 6023 at full height as Collett intended !

I would rather just see KEII working hard on its own but if it must be doubleheaded, then a 43xx or 78xx as pilot over the Devon banks would be the choice for me.

Agreed. Having a King to shove as well as a train to pull should test no.7 a little more than usual. :)
