There is a big marquee there. Last weekend the main car parking area was over the bridge from the station approach and turn first right. Due to the high number of visitors though I would reccomend you arrive early if parking for the day.

Is there an ECS to Cauldon Lowe first thing on Saturday morning before 71000 & 33021 are due to head up there? I ask because I believe last Sunday, 44767 & 8624 went to Cauldon Lowe & back ECS in the morning, as I've seen video of them heading up the branch, with 33021 on the train from Cheddleton to Leekbrook Junction. The only reason I can think of for this ECS movement is to get the locos in the correct positions for the day.

I don't know but I do know that it happened both days last weekend. I suspect that it was more to check the line for obstructions and condition the rail surfaces than a positioning move.

Yes that what is was a check for conditions and obstructions,so I think the same thing will happen tomorrow.

I thought there would be a logical reason for it happening. Thanks for clearing it up. Another reason to get there a bit earlier! :)

Yes, as p/wayman rightly says this is a proving run to check the line out before the passenger trains. 08:40 off Leekbrook (for Cauldon) if you want to photograph it. Should be the 33 on Sat.

I travelled, along ;with other 8f group members,on the 1300 yesterday. Despite the overcrowding, and initial problems getting people on the 1125,I have to say the expereince was fantastic. It's just a shame trains cannot pass at Cheddleton,to allow a bit of leaping from set to set.
A couple of photos of 71000 on the first train of the day are here...

Spent more of the day riding than photting so the vast majority of my phots are 'out the window' efforts for the 60's gala today, none the less a very enjoyable day however despite being freezing!: http://david1984.fotopic.net/c1918017.html

Thanks Sheff, was certainly interesting conditions to contend with, and a complete contrast from the foul weather in the valley.

    thanks Robert

    what a beautiful restoration job,

it maybe looked a little unauthentic next to a maroon mk2, but that really doesnt detract for me

I also thought it was an interesting addition, bit more character than our usual Mk1/Mk2 mix. Just highlights how few LMS coaches there are out there running... does 27249 have to go back?!? :)

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

I made my first visit to the reopened Cauldon Lowe branch yesterday and had a fantastic day. We started off on the 9:50 from Froghall and left when the beer train finally returned to Froghall. We managed to travel behind all the locos with the highlight being 44767 on the 13:00. The way it launched into the 1:40 leaving Leekbrook was awesome. 25059 on the return was pretty loud too. The beer train was worth the wait too, I spent it at the back next to 44767 which was certainly not just there for the ride.

I hope the railway does well out of the three weekends and that the ambitious plans work out. Does anybody have any idea when the next steam hauled trains are scheduled to run on the line following the diesel gala?
