Im sure they have thought long and hard at what they want and if they raise the funds then good to luck to them.

I know from my own projects if I took praticality in to account I could save myself a lot of money and hard work as I wouldnt take on the job.

I think there's a scheme already underway somewhere, involving the crafting of some foreign tram into a Y6 lookalike, could be the same thing? I imagine the donor engine probably dictates which type is being recreated, although I got the impression it was a case of 'well it'll look like one', rather than a propper replica. Hopefully someone will have some better info.

I can never understand why there hasn't been more of a drive to recreate one of these, they're almost iconic, in a quirky way. Maybe it's just me!

That is(/was?) at the Nene Valley using the Cockerill tram engine there. The engine is in a dismantled state. However the main driving force behind it passed away a few years ago so the project has since stalled. The last time I was down there (September) she was still in bits in the shed. I've heard some talk of progress but nothing official so can't really comment on it's future.

Yeah. I'd heard she was due to be put up for sale, but wasn't sure if it had actually gone ahead or not so didn't want to mention anything that wasn't confirmed.

Thanks for posting the link though.

I hope it goes to a good home, and gets finished. It's a pity it wasn't made more widely known it existed, I'd have donated money to the Nene Valley for its restoration. After all, how many (if any) steam trams survived in this country, and wouldn't a replica in GER livery look fabulous?

In a fairly recent issue of Steam Railway, there was a British chap in the US who was looking for support to build a J70 or Y6 from scratch, not heard any more about it since.

I have known about the Y6 conversion project at the NVR for a couple of years or so, it's a real shame it stalled as it doesn't require a lot of money (in railway terms) to finish - figures of about £4000 - £5000 have been quoted for overhaul of the boiler, and then the timber superstructure and a few other relatively minor bits and pieces are required on top of that. It could be a real asset for minimal expenditure, I'd love to see it stay at the NVR but perhaps the NNR would be interested as they have the W&U coach to go with it?

It'd be great if a group formed at the NVR for its purchase and completion as it really isn't far off, but we probably need an influx of volunteers and finance to make it happen. I feel the lack of publicity has been a major factor in it not being finished - I reckon the project would have been of great interest to the enthusiast community if it had been widely promoted, and the main problem - lack of funds for a non-essential item - would have been much less of an issue. A Tornado-style approach could've (could still) work wonders - i.e. build the body and paint it up without the internals in order to generate funds and publicity.

I wrote a short piece on it here a few months ago on my unofficial NVR blog. I note that the auction description linked to from here directly copies and pastes some of my text!!!

With the NNR having an original W&U tramway coach, could of been quite a sight at events, im sure enthusiasts would be queing up for a ride.

I don't think the NNR could get it up to Holt so it would be stuck between Sheringham and Weybourne. There isn't enough work for the Y7 even, thats why I think its going ooop north when the overhaul is done.

I very much doubt the (slightly) steeper gradients on the Holt section would hamper it. If it's anything like the Cockerill I've had (only the one, admittedly) it'd cope with any gradient, providing you had a slack enough timetable...

I'm quite sure that if Graham Hall was still alive then "Toby" would be running by now. It's quite sad that the NVR didn't decide to take on the task and complete it as a memorial to Graham.

Well it looks like the minimum bid has been met - will be interesting to see where it goes and what happens to it. Hopefully an active future awaits.

Personally I hope that it is restored, and not made to look like a Y6.

just had a look and it says:- result 22000, I guess that means pounds, but maybe not. I agree it'd be better just to restore it to original, could always build a replica tram engine, have a vague recollection of one somewhere, perhaps a replica, Hmm... maybe not.
