A bit of background information regarding the different spellings (taken from Your Leek Paper).

He told Your Leek Paper:- "Caldon Low is the quarry, and Cauldon Lowe is the village. Caldon Low, the quarry, used to be an ancient burial site, which is probably why the village was spelled differently in order to differentiate between the two of them. "To add to the confusion there is also the village of Cauldon, which is just down the road from Cauldon Lowe."[/FONT]

I can't see it is it me or have I got the wrong glasses on.

 

p/wayman, it took quite a while to de-pixellate, i.e. come into focus, on my PC, maybe yours is even slower so you thought it was done.

So the village is Cauldon Lowe, and the quarry is Caldon Low, where the line appears to terminate on the satellite maps. But the terminus is to be called Cauldon Lowe. Is that just harmonisation with the council road signs, or a statement of future intent (new platform short of the quarry, perhaps)?

 

Several of us will be down on Wednesday around Consall doing some work that was identified by the Sunday gang on their line walk on the CVR. If you see us give us a wave, we could be traveling down on the 1st train from Cheddleton.

On second thoughts looking at the timetable, we could be pushing a barrow down, glad Coboman is coming down to push it.

 

Working fine on my PC although it does take a few seconds for the picture to clear.

 

I lived in Stoke-on-Trent from 1949-1976 and travelled the lines on the footplate and in brake vans several times. I also used to go to the Yew Tree at Caldon Low once a month or so. Great Pub, very olde worlde. Used to have a large collection of polyphons. The village signs said Caldon Low, as did the one or two finger boards to point to the village. The canal was always the Caldon Canal too. I have viewed the recent spellings with some puzzlement.

 

On Google maps there Is cauldon low and a cauldon. Also in the re print of basil Judas book he puts a bit on the variation of the name.

 

On the Ordnance Survey maps the village is spelt Cauldon and the quarry Caldon Low

How about "Cauldon (Yew Tree)" for the terminus name, then? Looked at the OS map and an article on the pub:

It isn't far to walk and looks like it's worth a visit. Result, one delirious landlord and hundreds of happy rail fans every year, plus "somewhere to go" for the railway to promote. Perhaps this could be looked at once Leek and/or Stoke are connected, and the CVR/MCR heritage operation settles into a routine.

Hi, I'm new on here, first post. Yes, CVR and MCR could promote the worlds best pub crawl, with the pubs en-route. Perhaps a list could be produced for promotional purposes (with the landlords' consent of course!) Also, for those fond of their tea-cups, there are many lovely tea rooms in need of the trade, including of course the brilliant caf on Froghall station, as well as some excellent venues in the historic town of Leek. Pub and cafe preservation is almost as important as railway preservation! Both are also essential to the communities that they serve.
Looking forward to the opening into Stoke, which is sure to promote the right sort of "regeneration" to the whole of North Staffordshire, I have many ideas and aspirations about the potential of this new "suburban" service.

Not forgetting the Black Lion at Consall Forge. The licensee Jason serves a great range of real ales and the hot baguettes are a meal in themselves. I can recommend the Diesel 37 ale!

Stoke - North Stafford Hotel - railway hotel opened 1848, old fashioned, don't think they sell cask ale
Fenton Manor - Victoria, real ale town pub
Bucknall - Finney Gardens, was a lovely pint last time I tried it
Milton - the Millrace - a must. Foxley Arms, Miners Arms
Stockton Brook - Hollybush (family pub, real ale I think)
Endon - The Plough (bit of a walk)
Denford (nr. Wall Grange) The Holly Bush - lovely rural retreat
Cheddleton - The Boat (of course)
Consall - The Black Lion
Froghall - Is the Railway still open?
Leek - too many to mention, but a wonderful town for respectable drinking
Bradnop - ?
Ipstones - a couple of lovely pubs, but a fair walk
Bottomhouses, Winkhill - I need some help here
And of course the Yew Tree at Caldon Low (other pubs such as the Old Crown down the road in Waterhouses)

I'm sure these are only a tiny few of the wonderful attractions about to be offered to passengers on the Moorlands & City Railway, but I'll have to ask the wife about the tea-rooms!

 

I bet the beer costs more than 3d, though! Even Sam Smiths has got to £1.40/pint!
