Thanks - I'd heard of the remnants of 252 but never seen photos of it before. This article says the loco was originally constructed for broad gauge in 1855 and subsequently rebuilt. If so this is possibly the most important 'forgotten' loco mentioned so far.

I don't believe the loco was built for broad gauge, as the OW&W, although designed and constructed by Brunel, was built to Standard Gauge.

Cheers , I've waited years to see a photo of that! I believe it does, or at least did, have traces of its original OW&W or Wolverhampton paint job, so it's quite a historic relic, although I guess it's a bit awkward to display.

Another engine which doesn't get much coverage is this thing: http://nationalrailwaymuseum.wordpress.com/2010/04/01/leicestershire-railway-heritage/ I think there's a fireless engine there as well. Again, it's difficult deciding what counts as a forgotten engine, as it least this & Margaret are on public display.

From a colour photo I've seen of it in storage in Oxley Roundhouse in the 1960's, it appears to have Indian Red frames, I'll attempt to get a copy and scan it in (copyright issues permitting!)

Please do! I didn't even know that the remains of an OW&W engine existed! If it was rebuilt, as the frames still exist, would it be classed as a restoration opposed to a new build?

It would be v interesting to learn just how much of OWW No 32/GW 252 is still in existence at the museum in Leeds. The more recent photo only shows two wheelsets whereas the older one shows the wheeled frames (front end only) of what was an 0-6-0 & its more recent role immediately pre "preservation" suggests that all or part of the valve gear was on it.
The recent photo suggests rather deporable storage conditions for such an ancient & now rather unusual item. Perhaps if there is no space or will to display it properly in Leeds it should go to a more appropriate location?

Thanks - I wondered if this was the case since I'd have thought it'd be better known if a broad gauge survivor. Nevertheless this is quite a rare and early locomotive survival and I hope it will be restored someday (in its final state, of course, if anyone really wants a working loco they should build a replica). I wonder why they dismantled it? The apparently disorganised state of the warehouse where the wheels are stored leads me to hope the more vulnerable parts are being conserved properly.

Some more info about the history of the loco is here.

Due to its GWR/early railway links surely NRM/Didcot/Steam could arrange some kind of better arrangement for it!?

How about Manning Wardle Class M No. 254/1868 'Newcastle'? Withdrawn from service a long time ago, the frames - well cylinders, motion and driving axle - were put to use as a pumping engine at Silverdale Colliery. Rescued on closure of the colliery, these still still exist - well they did - I last saw them about 10 years ago in Stoke-on-Trent. As no other Class M survives, they would be a good rebuild exercise.

Hunslet 16" 'Newstead' - posted this on the other thread, which also had another couple of comments, but vanished! It ahs been listed as having been at several places (including Epping and Ongar), but does not seem to have been 'seen'. Any ideas?

And so was Gervase, the Sentinel now being restored at Elsecar, which lay neglected at the K&ESR for so many years until it turned out, according to an earlier thread on NP, the owner had forgotten he owned it!

Maybe not forgotten, but certainly not a "celeb": There's a Peckett 0-4-0 in Coleford Railway museum, in steam, but which only runs a couple of times per year, and can only shunt up and down I'd guess 20 or 30 yards of track.

When we went round one Saturday in the summer, we were the only visitors all afternoon...

Mike has a great little museum there too, lots of rare stuff from the Forest of Dean railways - well worth a visit.

One loco that comes to mind is 88100 which would be a very useful loco on any preserved railway. Just a shame the Bluebell hasn’t started to overhaul this standard class 4 tank. Would be a great loco to enter traffic after 80151 boiler ticket runs out.

I guess mostly due to Operation Undercover at Sheffield Park meaning the siding 80100 was on has now been removed she is now in the main running shed (or was when I last looked) and at the gala in the summer was next to 80064 for a comparision shot. I took a few photos starting here...

I believe, unless priorities change, that 80100 will be taken on by the team currently restoring 78059 / 84030 once they have finished that.
