Would be great, but can you imagine the moaning when a diesel pulled in on a train advertised as steam hauled? Both from enthusiasts and families...

I've got a number of suggestions, though not sure how possible this first 1 would be:
An LMS maroon gala with 8624, 6100 'Royal Scot', 42765 (by then will be 13065), 5690 'Leander' (and maybe that once red jinty painted red again). Hosted somewhere that prefers LMS locos...hey, how about the ELR?

I'd also like a 4 cylinder event, say: 6023 King Edward, 6233 Duchess, 6201 Lizzie and possibly a GWR castle to make it up to 4.

Or any other big event, as long as its got 45337, 71000, 35009 and 60163 there, sounds like the ELR's autumn event in 8 years time.

I guess I'm not fussy - the LBSC can come to the party, we'll imagine it's set somewhere like Redhill. Would be good to get the biggest possible number of locos and stock together in pre-grouping liveries. There's plenty of goods vehicles as well.

I'd also like to see some demonstrations of horse shunting as a side attraction, which was an integral part of the Victorian and Edwardian railway.

I wonder if the Mid Hants would lend their N class, repainted SECR wartime grey and re-numbered 810 :)

One downside of a pre-WW1 gala: the Sunday service would be pretty non-existent!

Which one? There were two; 16440 (also carried BR 47357 when red) and more recently 16410.
Would be nice to see either of them back in red though!

Er .. no! 810 was an N class, hence the requirement to renumber the MHR one!

The N class (and 3 cylinder N1 and K class tanks) were SECR designs; though more Ns were built by the SR. The U / U1 classes were an SR design, though clearly derived from the same gene pool. N Class numbers 810 - 821 were turned out by the SECR - see http://semgonline.com/steam/nclass_data.html

For GWR 180 it may be possible to have a mainline express gala with:

    A King
    A Castle
    A County
    A Saint
A Hall and a Modified Hall
    A Manor
    A Grange
    A Star (static)

What a line up that would be! Would love to see it at the GCR just for the speeds and the double line running, but WSR or SVR would do!

We could a have a 50s/60s LNER Gala. 60532 (repaint back to brunswick green), 60163 (would be brunswick green),61264 (should be returning soon),62005 (possibly), 60019, 60103 (York are supposedly working on what liviery it should be), 61994. That would give us the A1, A2, A3 and A4 line up.

I like to see something like a Branch Line Gala at Llangollen. Already got a Standard Tank & 64xx Pannier. Probably to mix in with the theme of a 14xx, Small and Large Prairie, and the possibility of the Dukedog returning.

    That would be my wish-list!

A North Eastern gala at the NYMR, LH&JC No.s 5 & 29, 63395, 901, 61264, 62005, 45428, 60163, 60007, 60532, 69023, 76079, 92214, 80135, Morayshire, and S&D (the proper S&D, not the slow & dirty!) No.1 Locomotion. And see what could be liberated from the NRM! Probably never gonna happen, at least with that many locos (3 don't seem to have any overhaul plans and Morayshire won't go to the NYMR) but you never know...

In a few years time, if the will was there, a good London UndergrounD gala would be a great thing to do, like the old Steam on the Met but also involving electric stock and other stuff with an UndergrounD history including:
1938 stock; Q-stock (currently being restored); Standard Stock (if ever restored); 1960 & 1962 Stock (Cravens Heritage Trains); T-stock (from Spa Valley); A-Stock (which will soon be heritage); Metropolitan Ashbury coaches (Bluebell); Sarah Siddons; the former LUL Panniers; Met No.1 etc.

Don't forget that VCT have the three Metropolitan railway "Dreadnaught" coaches at Ingrow. These three have already travelled quite widely in preservation, but never taken part in a gala as a "set" in the way you are describing. they HAVE been hauled by Met1 and L89 in their time, but not as part of an "LT" gala.

However. "Watch this space" as something may be "in the eind" for these vehicles in the not too distant future!

We did have a bit of that at the Spa Valley this year - LT Pannier L.99, an LT freight and a T-Stock in operation for the first time in 10 years! I would have loved to have got the other T-Stock running but didn't have time. Would have been good to hire in other rolling stock like the Dreadnoughts or Chesham set but transport makes it impossible!

Anyway my ideal gala line ups would be:-

    1. Being in one of only a few surviving steam sheds, a 75F Recreation Gala - a couple of Standard 4MT tanks, an Ivatt, the E4, the H class, M7, maybe the C. These would all have to be in BR black as well, but would look amazing outside Tunbridge Wells West.

You could also get away with Bulleid passing through or a Q or a Schools.

If the Swanage were to ever restore the push pull set, a recreation of when the H & M7s operated on the Pull & Push services from TWW across the whole of Sussex. I know it would be L&SWR but still a very good impression!

    2. Another 1967 gala for end of Southern steam. The two held at the Swanage and Mid Hants looked magic in all the photos I saw - dirtied locomotives, messages on smokeboxes and sunshine! Magic. And all with green coaches behind! How about all the railways in the South working together for 2017 and having galas across the area throughout the year?? That way locos can be shared around?

    3. Finally for the industrial enthusiasts - a Corby gala with as many RSH 0-6-0 Uglys in steam with the Manning Wardles too? Again I think that would have to be at Foxfield!

    Matt

Reading this thread there seems to be a good selection of different ideas for a mega gala. So witch preserved railway would you consider holding a mega gala at and why?
