Amazing picture Alisdair. I wonder how many clues there are in the photo to show it's not taken in the steam era?

Knowing it is a 2010 photo I can spot the modern baby buggy, the modern tripod and not much else. When did they put the ridging on the platform edges? Is that modern? Those things apart, I reckon there's not much to show it's not a 1950 photo!

The hazard paving is part of the DDA requirements (Building Regulations) so is relatively recent - the mk2 coaches are also a bit of a givaway of course though not quite so noticable in the b&w pic - great shot though.

I must agree the tail-lamp is the real giveaway!!! We had to wait for the adjacent HST to depart before that shot was possible, by which time the head-lamps had been removed and the tail one added, in preparation for the imminent departure.... Keeping the McDonalds and WHS signs out of the shot was the harder bit, as I wanted a slightly different angle, but this was the best compromise..... I certainly think it looks like a photo 'from before my time' (I was born after the end of steam!!)

I have an interest in taking shots at London Termini, with locos that would have operated there in steam-days (e.g. A4s at KX), and I was immensely pleased when the staff advised that 5043 was due into Platform 1 at Paddington, so this shot was possible....

    Cheers,
    Alisdair

The MkII coaches and general cleanliness are other clues, but it is still a superb photograph.

We had a good run on Saturday with 5043, very enjoyable - and I'm not a GWR fan at all! However, 5043 does seem the best of the bunch IMO. :)

Here's some clips from the day...

Yes fabulous photo, can be enlarged over and over with no problem. Differences...electric indicator to the top left of engine; woman on right in white trainers and a 'wheelie bin' behind her ( enlarged 150%) No trolleys around. But love it. More of the same please

Very nice, some cracking shots there Alan. I'm in your video as you pass through through Reading, at the near end of the platform opposite - and I imagine you must be in mine as well :)

Perhaps I am too! When BT finally manage to re-connect my broadband and I can watch YouTube again, I shall find out!

I just wanted to say a big thank-you to all the folks who turned out Saturday all along the route to wish us well.

If anyone has pictures from Oxford, I would like a few for keepsakes - Cheers!

Cheers Steve, thanks. Yeah, I can see my 'dead cat' mic & cam sticking out the sliding window in coach F (4th). Top vid mate.

    Alan. :)
