The current vogue when finishing off your Black 5 is to paint in BR black with a crest and line it out in the attractive red/grey/white lining.

However, has anyone, and does anyone know of any plans, to out-shop a 5 in BR unlined black as representative of how most of the class seem to look at the end of steam?

Arguably 44871 would be one of the more appropriate working class members to wear un-lined black as a throwback to its condition during the very end of steam in 1968. Thing is though, it does look rather nice with the lining and large early BR logo - and it matches 45407 nicely too!

5025 on the Strathspey would be another candidate as it was an 'end of steam' loco, however I think the current thinking is for it to return in LMS livery whenever it is overhauled.

No I do not currently volunteer
Mix ash rust and scale with alittle oil , daub on liberally, and write the loco no on with chalk - tada

44806 ran in a patchy unlined black livery for a while when first restored and under test at Llangollen, looked good I thought!

From memory, a number of Black 5s and BR5s ran in unlined black during the sixties, but they were by no means the majority. I'll have a look at photographs and get back.

    Regards

Would far rather see one running filthy in any livery than highly polished anything! If someone can find a way to convince the families and tourists the same, please do share...

45337's LMS livery has been delayed for a few months so an individual sponsor can run it in a "different BR livery" for a few weeks.

Perhaps it could be recreated on 45428. She's already halfway there with her boiler cladding, cylinder block, running plate and cabside without lining. Although her current mix of lined and unlined black looks very attractive on her and is a one off.

I think you might find 45428's immaculate appearance was as much to do with a shed repaint, following its selection as stand-by to 45562, for a well-recorded Royal Train working to Nidd Bridge, on 30 May 1967. According to legend, the enthusiasm of the 55A staff led to red boiler bands being added, although they were painted plain black, at the order of the DMPS.

Kept at Holbeck, after its closure in November 1967 (in company with the celebrity 5Xs), 45428 was subsequently bought for preservation by Brian Hollingsworth and Geoff Drury and moved, initially, to Tyseley, in late August 1968 (under its own steam - note the date!), in similar immaculate condition, before being repainted into LMS livery and being named 'Eric Treacy'.

Gavin Morrison's book 'The Heyday of Leeds Holbeck and its Locomotives' shows these and a similarly-embellished 62005, which also featured a copper-painted chimney rim.

I think they're repainting 45428 over the winter into lined BR black which is a shame. It looks much more imposing unlined as it is now (tender aside).

I'm glad that you think that. That's what I always understood but wasn't certain enough to contradict Riley's Ghost!
