How much change would you get from £1m for a mainline registered 5?

Could be from the strategic reserve. They might sell a Grange or a Patriot next.

    Re: 45321

I can't see that many would be purchasers and an engine is only worth what someone will pay for it . 4588 and 3803 have failed to sell at both original and reduced asking prices .

I'd suggest there are perhaps 2 candidates that spring to mind who would find a black 5 useful , but both already have ownership stakes in other members of the class.

    Re: 45321

High prices seem to have been paid for main line locos that are newly overhauled and have plenty of ticket left. 45231 is towards the end of its ticket and so one might expect that its current value would be around £0.25M (bearing in mind it probably needs a 350K overhaul) - but Bert Hitchen probably doesn't share that view!

Do we have a rough figure for what the Pocket Rocket sold for? She was mainline registered with a good few years left on her boiler ticket.

My sources on the matter tell me £600,000 for the pocket rocket, so id still reckon £800,000-£1,000,000 for the Black 5

It's only worth what someone will pay for it. Banding about figures of £1million will make some people believe that is what it's worth. Worth is a function of what it can do for you and how much you are prepared to spend.

    Re: 45321

The price for 76079 was for a loco that had just had a heavy general overhaul and a new 10 yr ticket, and the figure was not dissimilar to what was paid a few years earlier for 75029. 45231 is towards the end of its ticket, approaching an overhaul that could easily cost £350,000 on top of the purchase price. If you think it's worth 800-1000K before being overhauled you're suggesting its worth 1200K after completion of the overhaul - twice what was paid for 76079. Do you really think it is worth that much more? I don't.

44932's sale figure were published in Steam Railway back in 2009,
The amount suggested for the % ownership transferred suggests it's overall worth was over the £1mn mark... before completion of it's overhaul.

About the same time, someone else was offering a Barry Wreck Bulleid for £300k. ( apparently it had a good boiler waiting to be restored ??? ).
Wasnt a complete but non working Manor sold recently for £200k-£300k ?
and 3803 is widely reported for sale for more than a year in the £300k range..
and a pannier (complete but non-working over the £200k mark !)

And on ebay today.... there's a working PKP 0-8-0T for sale at £42,500 based at the Nene Valley with 18 months left on it's ticket.
(I recall it being offered for c£60k last year).

    Re: 45321

?? It does say Bert Hitchin in the first post!

It's no secret that 76079 cost £600K. As has been said by others, that was with almost a full '10 year' ticket. 45231 is near the end of its and will want a lot of work doing to it. Boiler work is expensive and it really needs a new cylinder so, unless one ex 48518 is made available, that isn't going to be cheap, either. 92214 with a similar ticket life was on the market at £300K, although I don't know what it changed hands for. At the end of the day, it's worth what someone will pay for it but I would suggest that anybody paying over £250K is paying too much.

    Caveat emptor, I'd say.

I obviously missed the point. Still not sure I've hit it now! I took your bold 45231 as simply emphasising the fact he'd got the number wrong.
