NCB Ashington/Philadelphia & Barrow Steelworks & Vickers Locos, pre'68

Hi All

I have added 3 new collections of pre '68 industrial steam photos kindly given to me by Colin Williams.
First collection are locos in the NE at NCB Ashington & Philadelphia, i have all the locations, but can anyone give me the loco builder please.

Barrow Vickers unknown loco {? a normal Hawthorn Leslie}

This one is a later Robert Stephenson Hawthorn built version of a Hawthorn Leslie design... to be really sad you can tell by the lids on the sand boxes which are square rather than round as on the HL design.

 

I'm not able to view the shots at work, but I think the name of the colliery you refer to is Burradon, not Barradon - it was on the Backworth system. ;-)

 

Just a note on the two pictures of No. 23. There never was a 'Bowes colliery' the pictures were taken around Marley Hill colliery on the Bowes Railway (formerly Pontop & Jarrow Railway) system named after John Bowes & Partners the coal owner. Oh and it's Hawthorn Leslie rather than the often misused 'Hawthorne' by the way and No. 23's appearance never really changed that much over its life except perhaps that she may have had a shorter saddle tank when she was new.

She lasted right until the end of Marley Hill sheds days under the NCB but had a cracked backhead which was considered a major obstacle to preservation back in 1970.
