As I suggested on the FS thread, here is a poll to finally crystallise, (for once and for all hopefully) the Forum's view on what guise Scotsman ought to return to the main line in.

Let's hope for a good response so we get a meaningful result.

I haven't voted, and not because I don't care, but because I believe their plan to vary the colours over time is the right one. If they get the windfall to allow the single chimney conversion as well then great, if not it's no big deal to me.

BTW, did she ever run in blue?

Love to see her in that at some point then, could do a turn with 60007

i voted that i dont care , because at the end of the day its only a coat of paint and what ever chimney it carries is not that important as long as it runs, so with the current double chimney she will have to run with the deflectors fitted

at some stage i would love to see a single chimney fitment with lempor drafting that would enable the drafting to cope with either type of chimney this would keep the improvements of the later modifications and for the engine to be able to carry any livery correctly

I like the blue too, but I didn't include it as I didn't see it as being a very likely candidate as her main guise.

I don't think anyone needs me to type out my views on £4472000, they're well enough documented elsewhere . Therefore, 'don't care'.

I think perhaps I would have preferred to be able to vote 'don't mind' rather than don't care.

I voted 'don't care' because I would also like to see the colours varied over time. I would also like to see the chimneys varied over time (with Lempor if necessary) so that the chimney configuration is appropriate to the livery. I'm sure NRM would get used to explaining the history of the different colours and learn how to market the livery changes. Although the current livery compromise is awful I will nevertheless be pleased to see it running again in 2011.

I am just grateful this loco is now in good hands and will back in steam on both the national and private network for us all to enjoy.

Point taken Ralph. Mind you, it's probably better than 'Whatever' or 'Don't give a .......... ' ;)

I would like to see her in BR green with Double chimney, deflectors. But at the end of the day I just want to see her in steam again and possible at my local preserved railway or a preserved railway not to far from home.

I wouldn't mind BR Express Blue but I don't mind how she looks. Its more important that she's running on the main line and preserved railways so everyone can have a chance to see this great loco.

Ah, my entry in Who's who! [Grammar Nazi] Shouldn't that be 'who's whom'? [/Grammar Nazi]

I do also feel that 'don't mind' is perhaps more accurate. It's not my cup of tea, but I don't have to look at it, if it brings happiness to many enthusiasts and the general public, it's probably best in whichever livery it does that most. Though, of course, time will tell whether Jo Public still remember the name 'Flying Scotsman' after a couple of years of 'Tornado' saturation!

Well that's the ton-up already folks, thanks to all who've voted so far.

Perhaps the poll to date confirms why there's been such a volume of posts on this topic, with original LNER and late BR neck and neck, and those who don't mind not far behind.

I'm in the minority who back the NRM stance, for several reasons:

    1. LNER apple green is definitely the FS brand.
    2. Personally I think most, if not all, locos look better in their original company liveries.
    3. If she's going main line then she needs to be equipped to haul maximum loads as efficiently and reliably as possible.
    4. I think the double Kylchap is a development that Gresley would have carried out, had he lived longer.

Having said all that, if we were to have the single transferable vote system here, I'd vote Don't Mind in the second round.

I can only remember seeing the Scotsman is one livery. LNER apple green, number 4472. And when it use to do the regular North Wales Coast Express excursions organised by Intercity from the years 1989 to 1991.

Like some other forum members on here. I not particulary fussed about the livery. Just want to see it run again.

This Lempor is getting a good press, does it require a large orifice ?

Regarding a Lempor - if any one fancies crunching the numbers, here's a link to a site with a spreadsheet that enables you to estimate a Lempor system. Of course there are several inputs required that will require some digging w.r.t. FS's boiler etc, and the end result doesn't claim to be 100% optimised - some road trials would be required. However, it might answer the question as to how wide the chimney might be. Lempor Calculator

well, fitting of a Lempor device would be a good move in my book because it in one step solves a major problem, its as efficient as the double blast pipe and you can still use a single chimney no dought modified to look as close to the original as possible and have a spare double chimney to fit if at some stage it was decided to out shop her as 60103 in its final guise and as the working parts are inside the smoke box joe public wont be any the wiser and the livery purists would be kept happier also , after all 4472 is not the same loco now as the one with drawn by BR, she now has air brakes , tpws and all the other stuff now needed to run on network rail in 2011 , so why not at some stage, say in 5 years do it im sure that the NRM could launch an appeal to get the funding, as i cant see any other safe way of doing it and still having an engine that would be suitible to the main line hauling heavy trains
