Going by conversations elsewhere, you're not alone in disliking it.

Although to my mind a fundamentally better looking loco than Lyd, I can recall that Taliesin looked rather odd in unlined black. In the case of Lyd black, especially lined out, reduces the gawkiness of the Manning Wardle design considerably. I can do without the smokebox numberplate though.

The BR livery is a good joke though and emphasises how intense and dare we say silly, discussions about this or that livery can get!

If they had put a standard BR smokebox plate on, they'd have had to rebalance the loco ;-)

Well, I think 30190 looks great. It rides nearly as well as a Double Fairlie (certainly a lot better than Tal, which bounces up and down alarmingly at 17mph) and can manage ten cars on the FR and five on the WHR...

Its nice to see Lyd in steam regardless of livery, yes a lot of people are looking forward to a dose of olive green and some big yellow letters, but a bit of lining and a ferret and dart board has broken up the plain black until it is time for the proper paint job.

I have not seen Lyd in action for myself yet but last time I was over at Port I was in the leading carriage behind Tal and agree with Andrew, Tal does ride a little "lively"

Probably a wind up but on another forum a journalist/photogrpaher mentioned Taliesin coming out as BR 30193. Now that would put the cat amongst the pigeons.

I saw Tal in black first time round during the gala when entering service for the first time, so nothing new there. Perhaps when returning from O/H next time then a novelty livery could be considered :)

The ride on Tal is about as lively as a Chris de Burgh concert in a nuclear winter. Try firing Palmerston from the tender a 20mph and escaping without major bruising.

Also Tal looked ugly in black, it did a good job hiding all the nice curves which are typical of the original FR locos. Putting animal stickers on everything doesn't necessarily make for a good or clever livery.

    Hi Guys!
Now we have 'Lyd' running well, we look forward to a double-headed 'Lyd' and 'Lyn'. The 762club has recently announced the boiler has been ordered and various other major steps have been accomplished.
If you were holding back on supporting 'Lyn', now's your chance to help get two L&B locos on the rails within the next few years. Check out the club website and news items, and consider buying a share, and/or sponsoring some parts!

I had a couple of rides aboard Taliesin when she was nearly new. The soft suspension reminded me a bit of a Citroen "deux chevaux" but without the roll. If anything she rode better than the carriages!

There was a difference of opinion between crews as to whether she rode better or worse than a double engine but I have no experience of the latter.

Olde Wilcocks Almanac 2011 in Steam Railway (other railway publications are available) is well worth a look..... soooo funny

I've had a copy of a doctored photograph of Lyd and Tal with Tal as 30193. It looks terrific! But it's not mine to post.

It's in this month's Heritage Railway, naturally Mr Wilcock is hugely excited about this paint job and there's a whole essay dedicated to it....

Absolutely, 30190 does indeed look wonderful.

Of course, if the 'liveries through the years' theme is to be continued, can we expect 'Rail Blue' with the B.R. 'double arrows' sometime soon? More fun than enough!!!

    Cheers

The article in Heritage Railway regarding '30190' is well worth a read as it lays out the background behind the idea and why it has been done (and for those who might think the crest is in the wrong place - why the crest is where it is).

Personally I think Lyd looks rather good in BR livery - but then I would as one of a number of "agent provocateurs" who suggested the idea to one P. Lewin...

Somewhere (!) I have a photo or two of Lyd's first outing with a BR crest in September - if anyone is interested I will see if I can find the photo. Likewise somewhere I have the crests from then as well, which being magnetic could easily be applied to another black narrow gauge locomotive for a 'bit of fun'....

Years ago, 2001 I think, the TR put No.4 in BR Black and it looked pretty good but the smokebox numberplate looks unsightly on a narrow gauge engine. Taliesin in black probably wouldn't sit easy on the eye, the big brass dome would clash too much with the darkness of the livery.
