    Frames are undergoing works at Ian Rileys, boiler is there on site also along with overhauled tender, i believe its now in reassembly stages then for running in on the ELR

    Thanks Norfolkman 1 the website for this loco seems to have come to a standstill .Wish they would have saved one of the two D16s that worked the Oxford to Cambridge line as they were both Royal engines .Holdens locos were fine looking engines

    It has been suggested that the B12 will be run in on the ELR but not on service trains. And certainly not in anything approaching a decent livery.
    All the components are now in the same place for the first time since this overhaul began.

    February edition of RM suggests running in at ELR before going home to NNR for repaint and relaunch at the Gala w/e in March.

    Presumably they do know, but if its only going to be running in on non-service turns why would they bother to publicise it?

    Interesting! I thought the Hon CME of the ELR was the person doing the overhaul - you'd have thought they'd talk to each other!

    A little off topic but could someone tell me about this locomotive's overhaul in Germany? I've heard of it but know very little about it, sounds interesting!

    I'm glad to hear the B12 is close to completion and steaming. 61572 is a locomotive very close to my heart, as it forms the basis of a locomotive character I write on for Youtube. As the only working inside cylindered 4-6-0 left in this country, it is one of the most important locomotives in the country, I feel, as it shows a form of locomotive engineering, rendered rare by the end of steam, and the scrapping of many inside cylindered locomotives in this country.

    Re: B12 in Germany 1991-1994

    The story surroundng the B12's trip to Germany; the reasons for it, and the trials and tribulations of having work done so far away, would fill a book the size of 'War and Peace'. Suffice to say that it was a very good deal for the M&GN Society at the time, we only paid approx. £50k for over £300k's worth of work, the difference being primarily funded by the German taxpayer post re-unification. The early 1990s were quite an exciting time to be involved with a steam works in former East Germany. I suspect that we'll never see such a situation again. Attached is a picture of the tender and loco in the Works with various bits of German rolling stock being repaired around it, the coach in the background was from the Harz system.

    I was once told that when the loco and tender were painted in Germany that there was a slight mistake and she came out with 'LENR' on her tender. Is there any truth to the story?

    Not quite correct. On the day a couple of our people went out to see the boiler put back in the frames the works thought they'd put some rough lettering on the tenderside (which was in undercoat) , and whether a Teutonic wind-up or a mistake is not known, but yes, it did read LENR but was very quickly corrected. When the final product emerged though it certainly was good. See attached of it ex-works taken just prior to delivery back to the UK.

    Is the B12 to be included in the "5 engine" summer season fleet in 2011? I ask because I usually visit the railway during the summer months (during normal running - not galas) for a two week period and wondered what my chances are of seeing the B12 in action!

    You would think that visiting during the peak season would guarantee seeing all the locos, but not so. The impressiveness of the NNR's maintenance team mean locos appear to run for over a week each (everyday) so sometimes (perhaps out of luck/co-incidence) individual locos can be "missed".

    It took me four years to see the Railbus and Ring Haw in action during August, but eventually I saw them both in 2010 due to the failure of the 101 and N7 respectively. Having said all that it was a great feeling to see them after many years of trying, made the visit all the more enjoyable! I had heard that Ring Haw is usually given a rest in August due to the size of the trains, but it appeared to be coping fine to my untrained eyes...

    Hopefully the B12 will be a depot pet at least for a while so will hopefully be seeing more than its fare share of running this year - I'm sure it will be a great credit to all involved, I'm really looking forward to seeing it in Norfolk :)
