45170 is going to be restored at Hepscott once 76084 is finished. It will be a few years before 45170 runs on the NYMR or any other railway.

I read elsewhere that the Heritage Railway report also mentions that the rescuing group are after two more Turkish 8f's. Anyone know if there is any substance to that report in the Mag?

The Group's spokesman suggested it might be ready be end of 2013. I don't know any more than he does, so can't comment: how about you? I agree it is unlikely but given the resources it is probably feasible, as Ian Riley has demonstrated.

I would have thought that once a thorough assessment of the loco and boiler inspection have been carried out a timescale for the overhaul will be announced.

I would have thought they would have done that in Turkey, especially if they had a choice of 2 out of 5 (or however many there are); you'd want to buy the two that were in the best condition in the first place.

You can never be sure regarding the amount of work required until things get stripped, the inspections in Turkey, whilst I imagine thorough, cannot have been that detailed.

    Re: TURKISH 8Fs

Ill advised eh, so were you involved with the selection of these particular locos? if not, I don't really see that you are in a position to make such a comment yourself.
Oh but wait a minute, you have clambered of hulks at Woodhams and you just happened to be there on the day that they turned up to look at 45161, so that makes you qualified......
If someone actually involved in the inspections were to make that comment I might be prepared to accept it, but in your case not.

Yes you have rattled my cage, I made what I thought was an innocent statement concerning what, to use your term, "hidden nasties", they might find when the locos got home.
You could have just said that it was not the case, but no you had to use the term "ill advised observation", but thats all it was, just an observation, not requiring you to slap me down arrogantly, like an errant child.
I now find that you think I am likely to be laughed at for this statement, I would be surprised at a member of the consortium doing this, as you seem to be, as I would hope they have more relaxed attitude about the whole thing.

23E did the people who inspected the locos have x-ray vision? No doubt, they can provide a full report on the state of the boiler and firebox, especially the plate thickness of the copper inner firebox and the amount of grooving on the inside faces of the outer firebox wrapper just above the foundation ring. Fact, the boiler has to be removed from the frames, declad and detubed, only then can a qualified boilersmith or boiler inspector do a thorough inspection and issue a report on the state of the boiler and work required to get the boiler up to first class condition. Even after this the odd nightmare could still surface.

I'm sure that's the last condition they want to get the boiler into these days....

I went to Shildon today and I've figured out why the loco has square bufferbeams, she has obviously had a heavy shunt at some point and the bent ends were cut off, keeping the middle of the original one, and new sections were welded on, simples! I've got some photos of her and the repair on my fotopic account. http://william.fotopic.net/c1935139.html
(Shamless plug 1 of 2 tonight!)

so moving on from that interesting tidbit...

NYMR could do probably the most interesting "UK at war" weekend line up if they got the S160, WD and 8f all working, hire in a USA tank and a J94 and it's Bingo.

The CVR could do the same with the additional hiring in of a WD and obviously when their 8F is restored. I thought the NYMR S160 was for sale as it wasn't well regarded by the railway/crews/both?

I was thinking about this last night, since that is a relatively easy to find selection of locos. But for the centrepiece, whether static or not (obviously would have to be at the NVR), get a kriegslok in for comparative purposes!

Maybe 23E if you read Ralphs post again, you would realise that he was referring to himself as the 'errant child' being slapped down by your completely over the top response to his remarks.

Does anyone know the tender numbering details for the two 8Fs that have been repatriated? The tender for 45160 at Toddington carries a plate with the number 9999, but I don't know whether this is a real number or fictitious.
