A typical comment from an afficionado of a company that added far too much air-conditioning to their footplates, cornered the global market in Brasso and tried to hide the fact that a certain Mr. F. Hawksworth had the inspired belief that 'if a 280psi boiler is good enough for Bulleid, then its good enough for the GWR' ;)! I laughed so much when I read this that my 'air-smoothed' casing almost fell off...

I notice it's called 'air smoothed casing' and not streamlining??

On consideration you could be contravening the trades discription act with 'streamlining'...

Ahh, but its not streamlining, as it has a flat front, so er-go its casing ;) ! I suppose that could make me either a rebuilt, or an unrebuilt under overhaul at Eastleigh. I prefer the latter!

I suppose my user name would be 'Bullied' Pacific (error retained advisedly, Spamcan!) if the GWR chaps had their way...

There speaks a man who obviously hasn't suffered from the unpleasantly hot environment of a Bulleid cab in the summer months !

They're not unrebuilt, they're original! How do you unrebuild something? ;-)

Spoken by a man who has obviously never been in the cab of a Manor going tender first in the winter. :)

Fine though all this witty banter is, does anyone have any information they can share about Tangmere's return to duty? I would expect a mainline test run sometime between now and 12th Feb. Has anything popped up in the local notices or time-table supliments yet? There was a rumour it would be this week, but that rumour clearly had no basis in fact.

IIRC, the "air-smoothed casing" was designed to allow the locos to use the same "car wash" as EMUs and coaching stock. I've never actually seen a Spamcan being cleaned this way, though I did video Tangmere passing through the carriage washer at Littlehampton station a few years ago, to get to the coal lorry!

Well at least it means (phew!!) that the thread is now discussing Tangmere and serving wenches and not other side issues :)

Wrong, I have ! No real problem, although I reckon a Dean Goods tender first might be a bit more of a challenge (I never did that !). But generally it is lot easier to keep warm in winter on a GWR engine than cool in summer on a Bullleid pacific - and I'm told that Gresley pacifics can be uncomfortable at times too.
