after consulting my TT and Method of Ops i must have been running a different ELR gala on the 23rd of october 2010 because ALL the trains ran to time and diagram.. unless things look different from the side of a hill behind a lense?

Keeping away from the February Steam gala thread.........

16th October 2010, diesel gala chaos at ELR.........

50008 leads 10:25 Heywood to Rawtenstall as far as Bury, where due to a fault that cannot be rectified sees 50015 (tail loco) take the place of 50008 and the train depart around the booked 11:00 time for Rawtenstall for an excellent trip, while it was a shame that 50008 couldn't contine I wasn't aware of any chaos........

Hope 50008 is out for the March event.

Even more annoying if you've purchased a ticket to travel on the trains and contributed to the running costs of the event.Assume you just stood in a field and whined all day because the locos didn't pass you on the conveyor belt in the correct order.

    Contribution to steaming fees/coal etc.£0 ?

Well I have gone through the actual workings against booked workings for the July and October diesel galas. July all locos worked to diagram. October gala, 50008 failed as mentioned above and was replaced by 50015 for the rest of the day, only delay was 10 minutes on the 11.00 departure from Bury due to 50008 being removed from the train and 50015 running round. Hardly 'chaos'. The only other change was 37109 replacing 40145 on the 17.46 departure from Bury to Heywood due to electrical problems with 40145. I could continue back to 2003 but really haven't got the inclination.

Isn't there a bit of a risk of running too many galas in a short space of time? It's not been that long since the ELR had its last one.

For as long as i can remember (and longer) we have always had an Oct, Jan & Feb steam events on more or less the same weekends.. it's generally the time when all the "home based" loco's are on site and there is generally quite a few guests available aswell.

Does anyone have information about which direction each locomotive will be facing, particularly the BR Standard tanks?

The plan is for everything to face Rawtenstall apparently, according to the ELR forum.

No Metrolink trams running between Victoria and Bury on the 26th and 27th due to engineering works at the new station that is being built.

Everything facing north, potentially against the sun?

Doesn't affect the passengers, only the cameramen. Wonder who contribute more to the cause??

Nothing wrong with which way the locos face at this time of the year as the sun probably won't be out! Even so, it isn't a problem as it can make for better photographs. A bit of backlighting is often very nice.

I don't ever remember having a problem with the sun at ELR, now if you were talking RAIN then that would be a differen't story.

On paper the ELR isn't a photographer's railway, what with running northwards, generally locomotives facing Rawtenstall and the fact that the locomotives work harder out of Bury than into Bury. And of course Burrs doesn't really work for returning trains.

Still some imaginative shots to be had though! Take the path from the Irwell Vale housing estate adjacent to the station, along the river, under the subway under the line and climb up onto the hill and you can get an amazing morning shot of a train heading into Irwell Vale station.
