She will have red backed name and numberplates, when running as both Torquay and Lydham

I hope everyone can see from this that here at DSR we are trying to coax some enthusiasts back. This event is being organised by enthusiasts for everyone.

Perhaps we can swap the names around again later in te season for those who did not make it earlier in the year.

If railways want to hire 7827, please write to our Operations Manager at Paignton and we can see what happens.

7827, appearing in BR lined black as 7800 Torquay Manor, Dartmouth Steam Railway, Heritage Festival, 28-30 May 2011, more details to follow.

Well, how to choose between the Flying Scotsman weekend, and the Torquay Manor weekend!! Both the same dates, both making their debut in black, both unique for that weekend, both 200+ miles away from me......

I will say, at Didcot last year, I thought Lydham totally stole the show, both in terms of noisiness and in terms of looks, to hear her storming up the demonstration line was amazing. And some of the YouTube videos of her on home ground are fantastic. I was very sad she wasn't operating when I did my trip down there last autumn. Personally I think she's best off in PDR-GWR green, but that's just me :)

It's interesting to see how the application of a different livery can almost re-invent a particular loco. OK, perhaps in this case the re-painting into a livery that the loco carried from it's BR service days has played a major part as opposed to the GWR interpretation livery it currently carries. Personally I'd like to see it with black backed nameplates but won't grumble about them being red as both are accurate.
"daveb" mentions about photographers being partly to blame for the lack of Big Four liveries and talks about people falling over each other for BR liveries. The actual point is that photographers like to photograph a loco with stock that recreates, as much as possible, a scene from the past. The fact that BR livery is so popular amongst photographers is because the coaching stock at a lot of railways is MK1's and therefore a Big Four livery is not appropriate. I'd guess that when 2857 returns to traffic at the SVR in GWR livery there will be photo charters with it on the GWR wagons. As a motto of the GCR states "Recreating the experience".
As work will prevent me from getting down to Paignton for this event I'm pleased to read that "tuffer5552" suggests that the names could be swapped later in the year as well. Well done! For a railway that is run more as a business than the way we perceive other railways to be run there is a large un-tapped market awaiting. It actually suggests that someone has been missing a trick in the running of the company until recent times. I suppose this is another "toe in the water" event which is up to the enthusiasts to now make it a success.
I wish the railway good luck in this venture.

I fear that's a slightly skewed judgement as although, granted, most photo charters involve BR liveries locos, there is a healthy interest in pre-1948 liveried locos on photo charters too. Immediately springing to mind are charters involving U class 1638, the E4, 4566, 4936, 4612, Truro etc etc - all in pre-1948 liveries. At one extreme of the livery spectrum just look at the level of photo charter interest for 828 on the SVR in September!

I think you've hit the nail on the head, Paul. Except for the SVR, NYMR, IoWR, and Bluebell who can offer Big Four carriage sets? Of course there are also pre-grouping sets to be found, but pre-grouping locos are few and far between currently.

I'm quite sure they ran with both Red and black background while in BR lined black. Just that some got done and others didn't over the years. I have a lovely picture of 7822 in lined Black but with black background to the plates.

When you look back over the years at the P&DSR, what's happened in the last couple of years could be compared to the changes made to the Earth since Humans arrived! I.e, not a lot for ages and ages, then a lot in no time at all (as opposed to it being exploited, ruined and polluted I mean!)
OK, perhaps not a very good analogy, but full credit to the new order for making these improvements to what is first and foremost a professional tourist railway business.

Come down to Paignton to have a last trip behind 7827 in green. She's running until just before Easter, then the repaint will commence! We now have the art work for the tender ready!

    7827 will run until Wednesday!
4277 will be taking her place from Thursday onwards.

7827 will then be washed out and taken to Churston for rubbing down and painting!

7800 plates nearly done! They look very good indeed!

Tender motifs here, smoke box plates on order, shed plates on their way. 7800 will appear at about 8am on Saturday 28th May at Paignton.

The timetable for the Heritage Festival has been sorted. First train from Paignton, 1030, on each day will be 7800 and 5239 doubleheaded. 7800 will work a goods train, the two 2-8-0 tanks individually work the Troop Train and the 52 will run a late afternoon goods also.

Away from the railway side of things, we have a cracking model show coming together for Churston, a classic fairground at Paignton, vintage and classic vehicles at both Churston and Paington and maybe even Kingswear, railway photographic displays from a top local photographer, vintage photo collections from various sources including Brixham Museum, a few traction engines at Churston, both large and small! Also, at Churston we have something really rather special. A WW2 display, involving nearly 40 military vehicles, including a "working" Anti-Aircraft gun, a full size replica Spitfire aircraft and a working US Army Sherman Tank, these will all be at various sites around Churston.

Come and support this event please!

Sounds really good. I'll be there for sure. My lad is 3 now so he will really be into it all this time! Last time he managed to keep saying "Lydham Manor Train" the only problem was he was pointing at anything that moved!

One question - when after the festival will 7827 be out in normal traffic again, and will she still be in black?

Yes, we hope it to be a great success!!

Stu, the Manor will stay in Br lined black for the remainder off her boiler ticket (around 4 years) She is most likely to be left in service after the Heritage Weekend, but will have to confirm that nearer the time.
