Taff Vale Railway No28. The only Cardiff-built locomotive still in existence (there wern't that many in the first place).

After that, any Andrew Barclay standard gauge 0-4-0, the older, the better. Just something about all that raw power, from such a 'wee beastie'.

    Regards,
    Ian.

Its tough 92240 was the first loco I ever had a ride behind but 55 Stepney is probably my favourite for a preserved railway loco.

Mainline I would say 4472 Flying Scotsman but 35028 Clan Line is very close. 35028was the first loco I rode on the mainline with in 1998 and rode behind her again in 1999 and have seen her two other times on the VSOE at Haywards Heath and twice in one day this year/last year.

But the main vote would be every preserved loco.

It's a toss-up between Schools class Repton and S15 class 825 on the NYMR. During my first volunteering ride out turn I was on Repton and was given the chance to fire the engine which was amazing obviously. I also travelled behind it on an evening diner to Battersby which was my first main line experience (it was doing 50mph) so that was pretty special and it was making a hell of a noise. As for 825, I just think it's the most fantastically good looking engine.

I'm also rather fond of 1501 on the Severn Valley. It's the only design of pannier tank I appreciate.

Well Rumpole 53 comes close but my all time favourite (and not "Baby" as you might expect!) is "Iffy" 41708 (MR Johnson 1F); She would steam well and time a 5 coach train to & from Norden. Has to be in half-cab condition (no pansy full cab) too. I think there are one or two other Swanage crews who would love to have her back again. OK you have to be on top of the job and have to top up the bunker several times during the day but she was the bee's knees! She needs a new boiler now and is incarcerated at Barrow Hill, but you never know...............

I have a slight bias towards NYMR and former NYMR industrials. The Lambtons, of course, but also 'Meteor' which I always thought was a cracking engine. I also have a soft spot for 'Nellie', although alas I never saw her running.

M.S.C 32 Gothenburg for me it kept going all summer even though she was worn out and more steam just past the pistons and up the chimney than atcully pushing the pistons with out her the Lancs would have had a few weeks steamless last summer. It will be nice to see how it goes once its rebuilt in april it will be a shame about the livery tho!

5029 Nunney Castle for me! (Although I would say that!)

It had a very good year last year, with all but one of the trains she hauled selling out! Unfortunately the spotlight didn't come her way during GWR175 as other locos stole the show.

For those that want to catch up with 5029's exploits last year go to www.5029nunneycastle.co.uk and go to the 'Out & About' page.

60163 is probably my favourite loco currently, but it is disqualified as it isn't a preserved engine!

4472 is a lifetime favourite, but not the locomotive I'd say I could watch and observe if I had the choice of just the one.

60007, specifically in BR Express Passenger Blue - Sir Nigel Gresley, as I first saw her on the Mid Hants Watercress Line as a wee nipper, will forever have a special place in my heart. Brought a lump to my throat when I saw her parked up at the NYMR last year - it had been eleven years since I'd seen her in the flesh, and that last time in particular, my grandfather - another fan of SNG - had still been alive, and with me, taking photographs.

I'll always treasure those happy memories.

    Has to be this one:-

New York Central & Hudson River 4-4-0 No. 999

NYC #999 is one of the world's most famous steam locos. Built in 1893 for New York Central's "Manhattan-Albany-Buffalo Empire State Express" it was one of 62 locos at Chicago's Columbian Exposition. It's claim to fame and the reason it has been preserved, (Chicago Science & Transportation Museum), was because of a May 1893 run between Rochester and Buffalo, NY. On that run it is said to have become the fastest machine of it's time, reaching 112.5 mph between Batavia and Corfu.

Yep, world record breaker and first steam loco to 100 mph. That was printed in the papers at the time, and the loco was preserved and idolised ever since by fans of the NYC railroad, so it must be true! LOL!

    LOL!

Somehow I'm more inclined to believe CoT doing 100 than 999 doing 112?

92212 for me. She hasn't been in steam for a while but we took her out yesterday and quickly remembered why 9s were so well-liked by the crews. Absolutely superb engine.

For looks i go for a GWR saint (with outside steam pipes) followed by king arthurs/S15's. As for locos i been luckily enough to drive and fire then its more difficult.
As Nigel clark says in a previous post both M7 30053 and iffy tank 1f 41708 are cracking machines and very enjoyable, but its a toss up between 92203 and City of truro. With my surname being Beale and 03's S&D connections makes it feel special. Truro on the other hand is just special full stop. 3717 it is.

Only two people going for non UK locos? What a sheltered life you've all led!

Despite that comment I'd go for Tangmere, closely followed by Taw Valley and then the rest of the preserved BP's. If you are new to the hobby though don't restrict yourself to the UK, there are many many wonderful locos accross the water, Czech 475 4.8.2's, German 01.10 4.6.2's and South African 25NC 4.8.4's immediately come to mind!

Had choice between 7802 - Bradley Manor, as I passed out for firing on her, or 5164, for all the memorable turns either on or behind her.

Not 5764? 60525 picked 60532! Don't you like the engines in your username?!
