I think I've said it before, but... If you search Youtube for class 26 Red Devil, then you will enjoy several minutes of seamless locomotive performance.

I think I'll go there now....

    Regards,
    Ian

Has to be 6024 King Edward 1, was lucky to help with the loco for a time and had a wonderful time with it.

It's a toss up between Stirling O1 No 65, and Terrier 672 "Fenchurch" for me. 65 because it is just such a great engine to fire, as well as being such a stalwart performer at a time when we were really short of engines. When all else was going wrong, 65 just kept on going and going - and seemingly it will steam with a candle in the firebox, a characteristic it shares with other SECR / SECR derived engines like 592 and 1638.

And 672 because it was the first loco I got to drive a complete round trip on, just as a cleaner. And nothing beats the busy bark of a Terrier!

Has to be 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.

Remember seeing it as a basket case above the coaling tower at Tyseley in the 80's; was emotional to be able to donate to help it return and then see it do what it did this year- unbelievable. The sound of a double chimney castle is really something special.

Other engines for me are the Duchess class for their majesty and Flying Scotsman because it takes steam to a totally different audience.

The best whistle has to belong to the A4's though

Many happy days with her as train engine. Also the first footplate ride I ever had was with her.

My personal fave has to be 828. I'm always humbled by the power and sound, it belies the Victorian appearance. Also she is a beautiful machine and a credit to the engineering department.

I chose 60525 as it was the first of the final series of Pacific designs to emerge from Doncaster under the aegis of it's namesake Arthur Peppercorn

Favourite locomotive? I am not sitting on the fence as I do have one but as this thread has shown, it's good that there is so much diversity. That's what keeps the steam preservation movement so healthy.
