The Crewe Heritage Centre is hosting a charity weekend in partnership with Freightliner UK in aid of the Emmie Dixon Home in Crewe on March 12th/13th from 10am to 4.30pm.

As well as the Centre's usual attractions there will be up to 4 Freightliner locomotives present including one of the new GE Class 70 examples and there will be a classic bus operating to/from Crewe station and also from the Centre to Freightliner's Basford Hall depot where conducted tours will be operated. These tours will cost £5 and are available only to visitors to the event at the Heritage Centre. These tours are limited to 30 persons per tour and are on a first come first served basis. There will also be model railway layouts, both British and US outline, brake van rides, trade stands and various steam locomotives present on the Heritage Centre site. There will also be on site refreshments and the normal Centre admission prices will apply. Contact Mr Rory Kenny on 07939 131490 for trade stand bookings and further details can be found on the Centre's website at www.creweheritagecentre.co.uk

Sounds like quite a good event to me! I am thinking about coming up, been meaning to go to the heritage centre for years, will have to wait and see if I can afford the train ticket as I'd be coming up from Swindon!

Following a number of online enquiries the Crewe Heritage Centre wishes to make it clear that those persons intending to go on the Freightliner Basford Hall tours should not turn up at the Basford Hall site, where there is no suitable visitor parking anyway, as they will be turned away without the required ticket which will only be available from the Heritage Centre on the days themselves. Due to operational reasons the Saturday tours will not commence until 12.30pm.

A further update on the Charity Event at the Heritage Centre. Tickets for the tours to Basford Hall will go on sale from the Freightliner stand in the Heritage Centre exhibition hall at 11.30am on the Saturday and there will be 3 possibly 4 tours on the Saturday afternoon with the first departure at 1pm. Each tour is limited to 40 persons. It is hoped that on the Sunday there will be at least four tours, possibly more but this is dependant upon fitting them in around Freightliner's operations on the Basford Hall site. There will be plenty of locomotives, both steam and diesel to see at the Heritage Centre, including the newly outshopped 70000 'Britannia' which is being prepared on Sunday for its test run on the following day.

37 photos from the weekend here, including 7027 Thornbury Castle, 6100 Royal Scot and 70000 Britannia, and internal shots of the APT. I was interested to see a number of boilers from preserved locos at the LNWR works for attention, including 30506 and 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. Overall it was good to see the centre looking much more active than on my previous visit in 2004.
