When the National Railway museum in York open in Sept 1975, what was the date that the Duchess of Hamilton arrived in 1976. Also was the museum open before the actual opening ceremony in 1975. Also does anyone have a list of what Engines where at the NRM in 1976 and what had changed by 2001 or where I can find the info for these two dates my be in a publication.

    regards
    Albert

"Railways Restored" by Ian Allan was first published in 1980 - five years after the NRM opened and would give you some idea of what was there in early years.

The booklet "Steaming On" by the NRM confirms that the Duchess arrived at the NRM in 1976 but gives no closer date. Nor do any of the NRM Guide books or other publications I have give a closer date.

Additional to my previous reply, the book "LMS Pacifics" by J P Rowledge, published by David and Charles in 1987, says that the Duchess of Hamilton left Butlins at Minehead on the 13th of March 1975 and was taken to Swindon for mechanical attention and repainting. It moved to the NRM at York in May of 1976.

I think I read somewhere this week that attendance figures for 2010 were down 16%, that's quite a drop!

    Cheers John,
Much Appreciated, think I will give bookfinder.com and ebay a whirl. Osprey, that is a big drop, considering that its free admission. I am also interested in aircraft and Manchester Airport figures where down 8-10% if I remember right. When I have read about other organizations they are averaging the same sort of percentage drops. So NRM are not alone.

    Kind regards
    Albert

The official opening by the Duke of Edinburgh was on September 27 1975. For list of locos see the nailed on (1976 vintage) scan.

The date of "Duchess of Hamilton's" arrival in York was Friday 21st May 1976, towed from Swindon by 25.202. She was placed on display in the NRM that same afternoon.
