What your failing to understand, perhaps because of your myopia, is that the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has nothing to do with the end of steam in Britain - unless of course I've missed that bit in our history of the steam locomotive. I don't seem to recall that Grosmont was one of the last great steam sheds unlike Carnforth.

While what the NYMR is putting on is commendable, what could be achieved by staging a similar event at Carnforth would surpass what could be staged elsewhere purely through association alone.

No I do not currently volunteer
If I can get to Grosmont I will, sounds fantastic. Like someone else has said though, it doesn't represent a major and genuine late 60's steam shed. Shame NYMR arn't plugging the event! Also its not what we are talking about here. What I'm suggesting is not an open day as such but a paid for in advance 'Plandampf style' glorified photo charter thingy. 5 Class 5s would do it plus the 8F, Jub and Scot. There was a shot in I think Decembers Steam Railway of 45407 and 44871 side by side at Carnforth and that got me thinking.

Carnforth however has access to genuine Black Five end of steam metals. Blackburn-Preston etc etc. Not to mention a turn table and everything else that goes with a big steam shed. Any photos you care to look at from early 68 are bound to include shots of 45407, 45305 45212, 44871 etc all around the Preston area.

Shame we carn't run a blue and grey rake on a Heysham boat train re-creation.

Plus if James Shuttleworth thinks it half decent idea then who knows!

It's probably best to just accept that we will never be on the radar of certain sections of the enthusiast community. Perhaps the number of paying passengers gets in the way of the photos?

For those that do want to TRAVEL behind a 5MT, then there should be the chance to enjoy one attacking the 45mph climb to Battersby, without having to pay mainline charter prices.

    Nymr gala.. My maths is 5 x 5 = 25... thats 5 x 5MTs @ 25mph :)

When the thread first started I don't think there was any mention of staging a gathering at Carnforth, it was a suggestion that crept in later on, and my point is that the NYMR meets many of the criteria for those who would like an active event, it just doesn't satisfy the photographic community.. As for staging a gathering at Carnforth, whilst you might get an 8F to join in, you probably wouldn't get any of the Standard 4s or 9Fs to represent the other classes of the dying days of steam.
