    I hope the finances for her return have been identified and ring fenced before she leaves our shores, I can remember the problems with 4472 when she went to North America and the company in charge went 'tits up'. Thankfully then we had Mr McAlpine to sort out the mess and repatriate her.

    Can we have some assurances from AC?

    Provided that the transport arrangements are all OK, funding for the return trip is in place, sending this this locomotive accross the pond, seems a good idea. A lot of people will be able to see a real "British" locomotive, it waves the UK flag and it makes the NRM some money. I hope that they get bonus points for it being foreign income!

    This is not the first time locomotives in the National Collection have been abroad:-
    - The Mike Satow built 1980 replica ROCKET was well travelled (USA, Australia, Japan etc.?).
    - I think that the original Rocket has been to Japan.
    - 1247 and the replica Locomotion went to the Sacramento Railfair in 1991.
    - FLYING SCOTSMAN went to USA and Canada, c1970-1973 and Australia in 1988.
    - GEORGE V and DUCHESS OF HAMILTON/CORONATION went the USA in the 1930's, not long after they were built.
    - The original Locomotion was exhibited by the North Eastern Railway at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876, the Chicago
    Exhibition in 1883, and the Paris Exhibition in 1889. (Does anyone know any more details?)
    Does anyone know of any other foreign trips made by NRM locomotives (apart from the Chinese loco).
    I also belive that some of the recent trips (with the smaller/older locos) have been made by air freight, can anyone confirm?

    Not an NRM machine but 6100 toured Canada in the early 30s.

    Boxhill and Cornwall went to Japan in the mid 1980s I am sure, and they and Rocket (replica and original) have flown.

    Only if you send it to Rileys & get it overhauled -- and preferably not paint it black , Tuscan & grey is the only livery accepable -- lol

    Thinking about when 563 comes home: will she go straight back to Shildon? It occurs to me that 2013 will be the 175th anniversary of the London & Southampton Railway, the pregenitor of the LSWR. This would seem a good excuse for 563 to take a tour around the south and west before returning home. Eastleigh, Ropley and Swanage would all, I'm sure, give her a warm welcome. At Ropley she would be with other NRM locos, 850 and 925 (hopefully running by then?). At Swanage, there's perhaps the opportunity to recreate the painting by C Hamilton Ellis of a T3 at Corfe Castle, and reunite her with the M7.

    BTW, now is probably the right time to start thinking about events for LSW175 - how about a gathering of all surviving LSWR locos at an Eastleigh Works Open Day, for example?

    I dunno, Black can be Beautiful too!!!

    I know we've got a 160Ton/95ft long/16'7"tall Northern that's big and black which would seem to be right up Mr Riley's alley in terms of colour choice if we could ever generate the funds for an operating restoration!!!

    A thought occurred to me the other day. The NRM has recently met with I believe great success in its production with Bachmann of the Deltic and Truro models, and it would not surprise me if the Stirling Single, one of the darlings of the collection will follow before long.

    Perhaps however with this interesting development in the life of 563 a T3 might make for an interesting limited edition model of a class late Victorian locomotive? Suitably advertised it may find favour in the North American market, and if as has been suggested it 'did the rounds' of the SR preserved lines upon its return it would I'm sure find a whole host of followers - it is a very beautiful locomotive.

    I'd take two of your hands, no bother! (One LSWR, one SR).

    Whilst I do consider myself an afficionado of the LSWR side of the Southern concerning pre-Grouping loco designs, I have to say that the best-looking preserved pre-Grouping locomotive has to be the SECR D class 4-4-0, followed by the T3. I am fortunate to have seen D class on display where Mallard resided before it went to Shildon, and it allowed one to appreciate the sheer grace and late Victorian/Edwardian elegance of the design better than at its previous location, where it was tucked away near the 'Station Hall'. The Wainwright livery has to be the most attractive (if slightly over-fussy) of any British railway company, with boiler lining consisting of several bands, and plenty of brass bits that put even the GWR to shame. 'Coppertop' was truly an apt nickname for such a work of art!

    Same, can't see the first one, but i could see the Beamish site update.

    On our side of the pond, construction of the Theatre Tent started this week in Roundhouse park. The picture below is from Thursday morning, i'll take an update tomorrow when i am down at the stalls working.
