    I've come across various references to some of these locos. Fine looking machines they were too.

    It made me think, what if Ford launched the all-new Ford Problem? Or to widen it a bit, we could have the Nissan Headache, or the Volkswagen Depression.

    In other words, why would a loco class be named "Problem". Was it a nickname because they were a problem to drive, or were the marketing department of the LNWR just having a bad day?

    It was 'Problem' as in the mathematiical sense. Similarly the 'Experiment' class was so called in the scientific mode; there was nothing experimental about the engines.

    Didn't George V design his own engines for the LNWR? ;-)

    I can hear the calls from spotters as the 'Parliament' designed loco passes:

    "Another f*** up"....

    I'm sure I've read that Gresley designed his pacific classes on different sizes of paper hence the name...(that's bad, really is..)

    When the A3 became A10 it must have been on microfiche?

    And A1 to A10 was an even bigger jump.

    @8, no A3s became A10s.

    The latter designation was used by Edward Thompson for the remaining A1 locos (those that had not been converted to A3 spec) so the A1 designation could be used for his "rebuild" of Great Northern, which was in reality a new loco.

    I thought the Class 60 diesels were the "Politician Class"; you can see right through them.
