    Hi all,

I'm currently writing a dissertation with the hand-in imminent, but have discovered it would be helpful to know approximately how much a Mk1 coach (or similar sized/weight vehicle) would cost to transport by road. Does anyone have any ball-park figures for this? If it is necessary to know distance, assume something like one or two hundred miles.

Unfortunately this is for a piece of written work, I don't have any plans (or funds) to assemble a new and exciting carriage fleet!

    Many thanks in advance

    Paul

Many thanks for this, I had a figure for £1200 but it seemed a little 'light'.

I have known it to be even lower (£1000) on occasions if it suits the haulier, i.e. not a "I want it moved next week" request. I believe the pick up/drop off point also affects price. They like nice spacious landing pads at each end!

The Electric Railway museum have been quoted £2,000 to move the 308 driving trailer from Walthamstow to Coventry. I think this is an all in price including the police escort, and arranging for some road works.
locomotives cost considerably more £4,000 to move a 47 from Essex to Eastleigh

Locos and rolling stock are moved all over the country every day. I've yet to see one with a police escort although there may be exceptions. £4K for a single low-loader seems way OTT for a one-way journey. I hope that you had several quotes but I'd be surprised that this was the lowest.

I have had a recent quote for a worst case move of my snowplough at 26 tons for £1250
This would be if the haulier had to run from home 150 mile to site 1 pick up and run 100 mile to site 2 then return home.

That cost may and I repeat May reduce if the move is not time critical and can also form part of a link in a chain of movements.
Fuel costs are playing havoc with all estimates though.

Are you including or excluding craneage? or are you assuming that said item can be propelled onto the low-loader?

I would guess at around £2k (without any crane involvement!)

4K is about the going rate for a loco move. Most 'Abnormal loads require an escort, however some companies use their own contractors rather than the police. Locomotive have to conform to Special Type Goods Orders, due to the weight of the load The problams mainly arise if the load has to go down minor roads. Thanks to everyone for the replies, very useful indeed. The work that generated this question is now handed in. However this thread is serving as quite a useful guide to movement costs generally!
