Cant say to much but is now in print in tonights Manchester Evening News.22/3/11 please read. £85 million transport link to go ahead.
the new irwell curve is to CUT though the railway at MOSI. This is the site of the worlds oldies railway station, the Manchester end of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.
This new route which network rail is planning as part of the Manchester hub will link vic and pic stations.

Sometime planners amaze me. Castlefield Junction to Piccadilly platforms 13 & 14 is already congested. The main problem at Piccadilly is caused by Transpennine Express trains to and from the Airport, which call at Piccadilly twice, and the Liverpool to Scarborough service, which has to cross all the tracks to get from platforms 13 & 14 to Ardwick junction. The Liverpool to Scarborough service is easily sorted by reverting to the Liverpool, Newton-le-Willows, Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge route, but the rest, I do not know.

Its another funny money project reading the article is it is to be funded from savings, which haven't yet been made, there a strong doubt they can make the saving to reach the current forcasted savings and now they will need to make even more saving to fund this. Isn't this just the same as returning from the suppermaket saying you have saved 10 pounds and yet some how you are 20 pounds down.

Pardon my ignorance - but can't see the problem if a flyover is built OVER the MOSI line - or even if a flat junction similar to the WHR / Cambrian line at Porthmadoc is used. The MOSI lines are mainly access IIRC and the curvature of the proposed connection should be able to allow the MOSI operation to continue. A possible scaremongering ?

    Hi Fred,

As far as a flyover both network rails line and mosi's are on bridges and viaducts. MoSI still has a mainline connection. Underneath and there's the issue of a dual carriageway and a river. If it was a flat crossing the problem is unlike the WHR crossing at Porthmadog both Network Rail and MoSI would use it very frequently. The railway operates in a 'Y' best illustrated on google maps or some of the videos on youtube such as the one below.

Until I see the drawings it will be difficult to say exactly what the impact will be. For now I'm keeping a look out on what does happen but like 504 there will be a limit to what I can say.

    Regards
    Duncan

believe it has been given the go ahead in the budget. it is meant to cut thought the site just over water street then over the dual carriage way, this will then link the up/down bolton from castlefield junction to the up/down chat moss from manchester vic.

A suggestion has been made elsewhere, why not send 50% of the Transpennine airport services via Guide Bridge and Denton? There are normally 4 per hour so every other going direct would offer a bit of space at Picc.
